I remember many years ago when I was about 8 or 9 I learned that the Aztecs made blood sacrifices to their gods by piercing the tongue and allowing the blood to drip down onto an offering stone. At the time I was surprised the tongue could possibly bleed that much but I didn't think much of it. Even though I thought blood was very beautiful even back then the though of bleeding intentionally had still not entered my head in any meaningful way. Instead I would wait for pure chance to reward me with some small injury so that I could prompt it to bleed more than it would naturally. Blood was a toy that I could mark my body with, but I rarely bled as much as I would have wanted and would inevitably end up disappointed when the little cuts sealed up and formed scabs.

Then not too long ago I tried to split my tongue. Twice. And it was then I realized the Aztecs made offering from the tongue for a very good reason: it bleeds and it bleeds a lot. I failed to keep the split open and I didn't really have an opportunity to make use of the blood because I was far more concerned with other things at the time. But I did learn something: if I ever wanted to just bleed the tongue would be a very convenient location to harvest from. Cutting it wasn't too painful, it heals quickly, didn't leave visible marks for others to question and just seemed much easier than putting a needle in a vein.

For a while after the attempted splits I was really sick of blood, I'd tasted it far too much and the thought of it was nauseating, lucky for me this aversion didn't last long. I soon wished I was able bleed enough to really have to freedom to do what I wanted with it. I took a one time use scalpel (I really have no idea how many of these things I've used at this point, I love BME shop) and prepared myself in the way I've come to consider my standard. I made sure to eat a full meal an hour before so my blood sugar was up and cleaned my mouth out very well by brushing my teeth and tongue and rinsing my mouth with diluted hydrogen peroxide. I also did this all in the middle of the night so other people in the house would not cause problems.

I opened the scalpel and pressed it against the top of my tongue since in my experience that area bleeds more. Just for the curious, cutting a tongue feels very different than cutting any other place on the body. When you cut normal flesh with a scalpel it feels very uneven. The blade seems to get caught and skips, like loosely holding a stick and dragging it over asphalt. Tongues aren't like that. Regardless of cutting the top or the bottom it feels very smooth, like cutting a piece of rubber, only it gives in easier.

I pressed the scalpel down and slid it against my tongue. The blood began to bead up and quickly started to run out of my mouth and down my chin. I captured as much of it as possible and used it as if it were some exotic make up, first painting lines down my face as if I were crying blood then placing three dots on my forehead. It seemed to be a much more vivid red then I ever remember blood being. In time I drew lines and dots along my knuckles and the back of my hand as well and some abstract patterns on my neck. By this time the blood on my face grew darker and darker as it was beginning to dry. I cut my tongue a bit more and tried to go back over it but I found the fresh blood just ended up wiping off the partially coagulated blood that was already on my face instead of adding to it. I allowed the blood to stay on my lips this time instead of wiping it off like I did before and enjoyed the look of my bright red lips for a few moments before I started to apply pressure to my tongue to stop the bleeding. I spent several minutes staring at the image in the mirror admiring the beauty of it. By that time the blood had fully dried and as it did it began to tighten and crack. I decided it was time to wash up and go to bed. I rinsed it off in the sink and soon found this took a lot longer than I had expected it to. Because the blood was completely dry it took a good bit of effort to remove.

I went to sleep content. The next morning when I woke up I decided, just for the hell of it, to try to drink some lemon juice. Acid on freshly cut tongues is the only thing I've found so far that is painful to consume. That entire day I kept finding spots of blood that I had missed (I normally shower in the evening and already had just before I started) Next time I'll be sure to shower immediately afterwards. Other than that the only thing I'd do differently is I would prefer to do it nude next time so that I have more skin to paint. In the end it was very satisfying to finally bleed enough to play with the blood as much I was would want.
