I had been talking about getting a nape piercing. I wanted to get it done because it's rare for an African American female to have this done. Especially in Kansas City. The plan was to get the piercing, and then get a glow in the dark tattoo of my son's eyes over it. Once the piercing was done healing I was going to get a glow in the dark ring for the piercing. Well after months and months of talking about getting it done I finally went to do it.

On March 24th my cousin and I went to Freaks on Broadway. I asked Steeny if she could do my piercing because I have first hand experience that she is really good. She said that she didn't do nape piercing anymore so I she sent me to Freaks on 39th.

When I went inside I told the lady at the front what I was there for and she got me the papers to sign. Considering that my 18th birthday was just days before I was really excited about my new found freedom. I didn't tell my mother what I was doing because she would have said no. She is a strong believer in not marking your body up with tattoos and piercings (even though she took me to get my first tattoo). So since I was finally 18 I took it upon myself and did something daring. This would be one of many things that I did to my body.

I filled out all of the paper work and she said that Jeremy would be in shortly. While my cousin was looking at the body jewelry, Jeremy came out and said that he was ready for me.

We went in the back room and before he started he explained the after care rules to me. After he finished his speech he asked if I still wanted to go through with it. Of course I said yes. It was no turning back now. So he had me face my back toward him. I stood up straight and he marked the back of my neck. It took me a couple of time to look at it because I thought that it was crooked. I realized that it wasn't so we proceeded. Jeremy had me sit in this chair and put my head on this table as if I was in class taking a nap. He told me that it wasn't going to hurt. I was going to feel some "pressure". He was right about that. Jeremy noticed that I was shaking. He said are you nervous. I replied yes. He said well if you keep thinking that it is going to hurt then it will, but if you realize that the pain is all in your head you'll be fine. All piercings hurt. Thats a given, its not supposed to feel good, but don't make that pain out to be something that it really is not.

He told me to take a deep breath and let it out slowly. As I took the breath and began to let it out he stuck the needle through the first part of my neck. He told me to take another deep breath. As I did this and let it out he stuck the needle through the second side of my neck. This where I felt the "pressure". When he stuck the needle in at first it didn't really hurt too bad. But when he poked me the second time I really felt the pain.It wasn't painful enough that I was about to cry but it hurt enough where I flinched. Jeremy asked me to take one last and final deep breath. As I did this one he slid the jewelry in and screwed on the metal plates. When he finished I was stiff as a board. He told me to stand up with my back toward him so he could make sure that it was straight. He looked and told me I was good to go. He said that my body took the piercing well because I didn't bleed not one drop of blood. I thought that was really great considering that my body is so sensitive. I bleed easily.

Well needless to say my first piercing was successful. Jeremy was great because he wanted to be sure that everything that he did was safe and I was comfortable. I thought that it was going to be a lot worse than what it was but it turned out to be all right. If I had the chance to do it again I would because it wasn't that bad. I think getting a surface on your tongue hurts a lot worse than the nape. I know from experience. Like Jeremy said: the pain is all in your head. Piercings are supposed to hurt. I think that was the best advice that he could have given me because after he said that everything was fine. There was a little discomfort, but I was okay. I love my nape piercing. It is really hot!
