This experience depicts a piercing that isn't exactly common and sometimes hard to pull off. I don't recommend or advocate this piercing to anyone at any given time. Don't repeat my stupidity.

I had a callous, a pain in the ass one at that. Being in the industry that I'm in as a Chef I work with my hands quite a bit. Over the years I have developed a permanent callous that lives in the palm of my hand right below my middle finger. Sometimes it get's exceptionally itchy and I have a tendency to rub the palm of my hand on anything that is rough because scratching it with my fingernails doesn't suffice. Because of that, more often than not I get this huge blister that irritates me even more. One day this had happened yet again and of course my initial goal was to just get rid of the dam thing.

You see calluses never go away permanently, they hang out and will go soft with time but I swear this one was so deeply rooted into the palm of my hand I had no hope. Your likely wondering what in God's name does this have to do with piercing? Well I'm getting to that. Hubby is a body piercer so there's almost always spare needles and stuff kicking around my place and trying to avoid an infection and wanting to kiss that blister good-bye I used one of Jeff's needles to try and drain it. The skin was surprisingly thick and exceptionally hard to get that initial puncture. So the water was draining out of my blister and I said to Jeff as a joke, maybe I should stick some jewelry in this.

I hadn't gotten the needle out through the other side as of yet my main objective was to just puncture my blister. So with needle still in my hand I rooted around for some 16g jewelry that I had. I thought I can do something abnormal for fun and maybe get rid of my callous once and for all. So I brought the needle down to the base of my first hole and shoved it a little deeper into the palm of my hand. This didn't hurt since I have very little nerve endings left in my hand after all these years. I un screwed the ball off the one end of the curved barbell that I was using and since it was a 16g barbell and I was using a 14g needle the jewelry fit into the end right nice.

It was awkward to get the needle all the way through since this was on my right hand and I'm also right handed so I was using my left to try and pull this off. There was no clamps, no receiving tube just that blister acting as my guide. Well it worked and I figured that I wouldn't have it for long. I didn't even want it in the first place as I was just screwing around. It wasn't that deep; you could still see the jewelry through my skin and all. I left it in for a little while because it amused me to no end. It wasn't nearly as awkward as I thought it would be oddly enough. Grabbing onto things and trying to close the palm of my hand was interesting but not complicated.

I won't get into details about aftercare since there really wasn't any unless you count the times I washed my hands through out the time I did have it (about 2 hours). I was concerned about getting an infection or having some crazy insane adverse reaction to the metal or something but there was nothing at all. Of course I got bored and slowly started pulling out my piercing. After all traditional methods of jewelry removal didn't suffice so I just ripped it out. Not the brightest thing to do of course since it left me with an annoying flap of skin. So I got some surgical scissors and removed the excess skin. Than of course it started to burn so I got some anti-biotic ointment and covered it with a band aid. The next day I had a gapping wound in the palm of my hand that was itchy and sore because of the exposed skin so I kept it covered with a band-aid. Took about three days before fresh skin grew over it in case you were wondering.

I thought I had conquered my callous with the success of my piercing but that of course wasn't the case. It returns every now and than when it get's really itchy and I've been tempted to pierce it again but I figure the next time it irritates me like that I'm just going to take a scalpel and cut the damn thing out and give myself a scarification instead. So there you have it, like Tim my tattoo artist likes to say: if you can pinch it, I can certainly pierce it. Not that I advise anyone to pierce the palm of their hand with the intention of actually keeping it. Considering the amount of stuff one does with their hands on a day to day basis an infection would be imminent I would think. Not only that, leave awkward piercings up to pro's who have the proper equipment and the proper jewelry. I at least have such things at my disposal whenever I get the burning urge to stab holes into my body.

Sad thing is I did have pictures because people thought that it wasn't possible but of course I can't find them now. Anyway nothing is impossible if the circumstances are right.
