I saw a girl with a surface piercing on her lower back in an airport a few years ago. I thought it was amazing and haven't been able to get the picture out of my head since. So, after much deliberation, I finally decided to get mine done. I had to drive about 2 hours to Springfield to find a place that would do it, but it was well worth the drive.

The piercer first marked my back and we put it about an inch below where my pants lay, so that I would be able to hide it if I needed to. Then I laid down flat on my stomach on the table and rubbed the skin of my lower back for about two minutes to get it loosened up a little bit, so it would be easier to pierce. Then, he tried to get the clamps on, but I didn't have enough skin to pinch, so he had to just free hand it. He told me to take a few deep breaths and he began to push the needle through. He just used a straight needle. The actual piercing part really didn't hurt at all. I didn't even feel it when the needle started going through my skin. But, the needle got stuck a little bit in coming out the other side and he had to shove it through. That pinched a little, but really not bad at all. But, then I'm not going to lie to you, getting the jewelry in hurt like hell. Since it is a surface bar, it has two ninety degree angles, which made getting it in place a little difficult. Getting the first angle through wasn't as bad as the second one. The bar got stuck about halfway in on the second angle and he had some trouble getting the jewelry the rest of the way through. So, he rubbed the skin around the second hole and just tried to get it through. It took about a minute and a half of the jewelry being halfway in and him just playing with it and fiddling it around to get it all the way in and situated just right. I felt a little pop and there was a pretty sharp, strong pain as it went the rest of the way through and was in the right place. He told me there was one drop of blood when the jewelry finally went through, but it didn't bleed at all after that and never was really that sore.

I had to drive all the way back home right after, so I was sitting with my back leaned against the car seat and I couldn't even feel it. I didn't even try to lay and sleep on my back the first night. But, on the second night, I tried rolling lightly onto my back and it didn't hurt at all. Since then, I have had no trouble sleeping on my back. The piercer said that the best way to get this kind of piercing to heal was really just to leave it alone, so I wash it once a day with Dial, but besides that I just let it be. I also expose it to the air whenever possible and it feels much better than when I have on clothes that cover it even if they don't touch it or rub on it. I've had it for about a month now and it's still doing really well. It does hurt occasionally if my jeans get stuck on it, but it really hasn't caused any big problems. It was slightly swollen and red for a few days, but it has been fine ever since.

I would definitely recommend Next Generation for this piercing or any other for that matter. It was very clean and the piercer was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. He answered all of my questions very patiently. I think the only reason getting the jewelry in took so long and was painful, is just that my skin was so tight. The piercer was gentle though and I never had any bruising at all. The only thing I would say is that if you get it done, get disks put on the ends instead of balls. I got balls on it, and they get caught on things and I have hit it a few times with my backpack when putting it on. My clothes would get stuck on it and pull it down which caused quite a bit of discomfort. I recently changed the ends to disks that lay flat against my skin and it's even better now. I haven't caught it on anything since. I would definitely recommend this piercing to anyone that's thinking about it. The healing hasn't been that bad and it looks amazing!
