When It just happened
Artist Mitch
Studio Liam's Piercing Studio
Location Toowoomba, Australia
It was Tuesday night and as I lay awake in bed I remembered that I had to go for my piercing checkup tomorrow on the surface bar below my navel. I started considering a new piercing but wasn't sure if I should, as my body has a low immune system and my other surface bar was still in the healing process. I was seriously considering a sternum surface bar. In the end I decided to just ask Mitch the next day what he thought and then concentrated on getting to sleep.

Wednesday came and I headed into town to the studio I always go to (Liam's). I showed the receptionist there my surface bar and she said it looked to be healing well. Then Mitch came into the room and said the same thing.

I took the opportunity then to ask him about getting another piercing. He asked me what I was thinking about getting done and i told him my sternum. He said that, that should be fine providing I took good care of it. He said that he would pierce up to four places at the one time but no more than that.

So my next question was, was there an appointment available today. It was 1:15pm and the receptionist informed Mitch that they had an appointment scheduled for 1:30pm, but 1:45pm should be fine as this would give them time to sterilise the jewellery. I said that sounded great to me and headed off down the street to get some money out of the bank.

I had stood there talking with the receptionist for a while about different piercings and different healing times and hindrances so I only had 15 minutes, which meant I would have to hurry. So I grabbed my pay out the bank and picked up some phone credit on my way back to the studio.

I sat in the waiting room for a little bit, while I waited for the jewellery to be ready. About 10 minutes later Mitch came out and called me into the piercing room. My breathing had gone a little crazy at this stage and I felt the nerves racing down my spine.

I took off my shirt and stood up so mitch could mark me up. I could see I was shaking by this stage as I thought this particular piercing would be fairly painful. Mitch even said he could see my heart practically beating out of my chest! I asked him if it would hurt more than the surface bar I had below my navel and he said he couldn't really say but he imagined it should be about the same. I sure hoped so! I don't particularly like pain but I figure the end result you get from piercings once they have healed and are looking great makes it all worth while in the end.

He took the all too familiar marking pen out of one of the stainless steel drawers and drew the dots on my chest. I then went over to the mirror to have a look and make sure they were where I wanted them to be. I wanted the piercing to be visible when I wore low cut tops, but low enough to be hidden by my collared work shirts. Where Mitch had placed the dots was perfect. He said it would be out of the way of any necklaces I might wear as well.

So I lay down on the bench and Mitch told me he would be as quick as possible. He pushed the needle through and it wasn't overly painful really. He asked which of my surface piercings had been more painful and I told them they were about the same. Then it was time to put the jewellery through. This is always a bitch. It hurts more than the bloody needle! But all too soon it was in, the ball was screwed on and I was looking at the beautiful new part of me in the mirror. I loved it!

I threw my shirt back on and went to pay at the front counter. Mitch told me to come back in a week or two for a checkup. I told him I would be back in two weeks on my next day off (I get every second wednesday off). He said he would take a look at my stomach one again then as well. I thanked him and left feeling very happy with the job done.

No doubt I will be back there again once my stomach one has healed to get something else done. I don't want to push my immune system too far and have them refuse to heal properly! I'm not sure what I will get done next. Maybe nape. I'll have to think about a way I can cover that for work. Oh, well. Happy piercings!
