I'm the type of person that gets very easily bored with routine, and when my life became just that I needed something to do to get me out of the 'rut' I was in. I chatted with my friends to think of things that I could do, I got a lot of suggestions but one in particular stuck with me. One of my good friends Katie told me that I should get something pierced because she found herself in the same 'rut' that I found myself and that's what she was contemplating doing. So for the next 2 weeks (or longer) I thought about different piercings I thought I might get. Once again I turned to my friends for suggestions. Most of them came up with the same idea belly buttons, nose, tongue, and industrial. But unfortunately that did not satisfy me.
At A Glance Author bekks Contact bekks@bme.anon When A year ago Artist can't remember his name Studio Altered Native Location Georgetown I was talking with one of my best friends Melissa, we we're trying to think of the most crazy and random piercings just for the fun of it, joking around she said hey why don't you pierce your neck! As soon as those words came out of her mouth my mind was made up, a neck piercing is what I wanted and I would stop at nothing to obtain it.
That afternoon Melissa and myself walked across the street at lunch to the altered native. There wasn't a piercer available (he was working on a tattoo) so I chatted with the girl at the front counter and made an appointment, I think she noticed my hesitant fashion so she gave me the number and said if you want to change what you're getting pierced or cancel just call.
That night I talked it over with one of my older sister that has had many piercings and a few tattoos over the years, she reminded me of all the questions I forgot to ask and sent me back on my way, saying she thought it would be a cool piercing.
I was starting to feel a bit nervous because my sister had kindly mentioned to me that in my particular case I had to get a doctors note to get any piercing because I have a ventrical septal defect (a hole in my heart). So I went to the altered native once again and made sure that was all I needed, and sure enough it was, so I scurried to the doctors office chatted with him and got my handy dandy note.
The day had arrived September 29th, after school Melissa, Steph (another friend) and myself crossed the street once more and nervously walked into altered native. I handed over my doctor's note and ID and walked to the back, I sat in the chair and watched to make sure everything was sterile. He drew on my neck and then asked if I like where it was placed, it took a good 5 minutes if not more to get the mirrors lined up so I could see it, but I approved as soon as I saw it. He told me to take a deep breath and as I was exhaling he jabbed a metal stick through my neck, it was glorious. I can honestly say that getting my ears pierced hurt more than getting my neck pierced (and yes I remember getting my ears pierced it was only 2 years ago). After it was pierced, and after hearing my friends screaming because they were nervous for me, I saw 2 heads poke out from the side, it was the 2 girls working there and they stood in the doorway waiting for my reaction. The piercer had a big grin on his face and asked to take a picture of it, I agreed. After he had taken the picture he kindly told me "Oh by the way that's the first time I've ever done that piercing before" My jaw dropped a little but I wasn't too worried because he explained after that he had watched some being done before and the whether it was me or not the next person asking for it he would have done because he had seen it enough times to be able to do it safely himself. He then gave me instructions and the cleaning stuff; he also gave me a sheet with piercing aftercare and sent me off on my way (after paying of course).
People were so shocked seeing it and I just LOVED seeing people's faces as they found out that yes, my neck was pierced.
Getting my neck (well technically nape) pierced was one of the best experiences of my life, it was a HUGE adrenaline rush, and it did serve its purpose to temporarily get me out of my 'rut'. And although most people argue that it's a very dangerous piercing to get I say just do your research, talk to your doctor and see what his opinion is. I love it, and recommend it to anyone and everyone!
