In the summer of 2004 I decided to get my surface pierced underneath my belly button. I've always liked this piercing since not many people in my town had it and I thought it would be different. I also seen pictures of it on the internet and I thought it looked really cute with your belly button pierced as well. I knew this piercing was going to hurt more than getting your belly button pierced but I did not care. The piercing was going to cost $70 which is more expensive than most piercings but I understood why it would cost more.

When I went to get the piercing done my friend Charlotte came with me to watch. The piercing took about 35 minutes to do...only because its hard to find a specific clamp for that area on your body. I'm not going to lie the piercing did hurt to get...it was very slow and my stomach was already burning from all the clamps that were put on. Charlotte was about to pass out from watching me get the piercing done! When she told me that she was going to pass out I thought it was bleeding a lot but surprisingly it wasn't bleeding that much at all! The type of bar I got was plastic so that when I moved the bar would be able to move with my body and it would have less chance of tearing my skin.

A few days after I got the piercing done, me and Char went to the beach and I wasn't very smart and decided to lightly lay on my stomach to tan my back. My piercing didn't hurt as I was laying on it but when we got up to leave I noticed that it was bleeding. I got home and cleaned it but it didn't stop. Finally the next day there was no more blood and I decided to let the scab just fall off instead of picking at it and making it worse. After a few days the scab was gone and everything looked good again.

As your piercing heals, with the plastic bar, you are able to cut the plastic on an angle to make the bar smaller. The first time I cut it I only cut small pieces because I didn't want to wreck the bar. When my piercing was almost fully healed I cut the bar way too small and I could barely get the balls back on. When I did finally the piercing was so irritated and swollen from my pushing I had to go back to the piercers to get them to change the bar for me. It didn't take long for the swelling to go down and I was glad that they told me my piercing wasn't infected, since I was starting to worry.

About 6 months later the piercing was fully healed and looked great! Everyone that saw my piercing loved it. I would be in a store and people that worked there would stop me just to look at it and ask me questions about the piercing. I think thats one of the things I liked most about it because people around here haven't really seen a piercing like this before and I knew that if others started to get this then maybe it would be because of me.

One day I was sitting at the table and as I went to get up I hit my surface piercing off the table and it pulled it up. It didn't hurt that bad and the piercing only looked irritated but as the weeks went by it started to look worse and worse. I thought the piercing was just infected so I kept cleaning it and nothing was happening.

I finally decided to call the piercers and they told me that if the holes seemed to be getting closer the piercing was rejecting and I should take it out before it pushed out itself. When I took the piercing out I was upset because it felt like I was missing something and it was strange not being able to play with it anymore. Its been a few months and I still have the scar...I've been applying cream to make it fade. This summer my friend Katie and I plan on getting piercings. She wants to get the bottom of her belly button piercings and hopefully my scar will be faded and I will be able to get my surface redone. The piercers said that if I get it redone they will pierce underneath and just nick the scar tissue to hold the piercing in better.

Just because my piercing experience didn't go as well as I hoped doesn't mean other people shouldn't get it. What I didn't really realize was how easily irritated that type of piercing got. All you have to do to make sure your piercing doesn't reject is to be very careful with it. Don't play with it like your belly button or most other piercings because that will cause it to get irritated and it will go red. You probably shouldn't change it a lot too...but my advice is if you ever get it pierced go with the plastic bar because its much better than the normal surface piercing bar.
