When people say piercings are addictive... they mean it. My navel had to have started that addiction (I have my ears but I was young). I got that done in August of '04. I have a friend who is really into piercings, and he got me really into them also. I wanted another one by October, and didn't know what to get. Between then and my final choice, I had gone through the thought of tongue, lip, more navels, and finger, before finally deciding on a sternum piercing. This was a really big deal to me because I am not usually the one that would do something that would be considered "out of the ordinary", not to mention I was paying for it, and my parents had no idea. I live with my mom and my grandparents, so that doesn't work too well. They had a fit when my mother let me get my navel, but it wasn't so bad because they don't have to look at it. Before I got my navel my mother had said I can get whatever I want as long as she doesn't have to see it, and if she doesn't know about it, then that's even better. I had to wait almost two weeks after I had decided on it before I could get it done. Paycheck and ride availability. The last few days before I got it, a lot of people knew. Word spreads fast. Some thought it was cool, but the closest of friends thought it was nasty, which is weird because they also like piercings. Apparently not this type.

It was perfect. The front was a "v" so you'd be able to see the piercing once I got it done. We got a ride to the mall next, where we met my buddy that's into piercings, jumped on the bus and headed to the closest piercing place. Well it wasn't the closest, or the cheapest, but it had a good reputation and was trusted. I was a little nervous, but not as much as I thought I'd be. We got there and my buddy got his ears pierced before it was my turn.
Two other friends of mine ended up showing up before I got ready to be pierced. The piercer got all the stuff ready, and had me pick out a length. At first I chose the smaller one because you know, shorter distance, less pain, but then I decided it would look better with the longer one, so I had to suck it up. I took my shirt off and he measured and marked me. I checked in the mirror, and we were good to go. A friend that just came in offered me her hand, so I said sure why not. I laid down and he clamped the area. I'm not going to lie, it hurt, but I didn't start squeezing her hand just then. I had read that the clamps are the worst part so I though ok, this isn't gonna be so bad. Then he started to stick the needle in. It killed! It got stuck halfway through so he had to jiggle it a bit. By now my friends hand was purple. Two of the others were laughing. It only hurt for maybe... the 30 seconds he had the needle in. Once through he removed the needle and placed in the barbell. That was just a pinching feeling. After he screwed the balls on and tightened them, there was just the tiny throbbing unnoticeable pain. Then he had me check it out. Oh man did I love it! I thanked him and paid, giving him a tip. Then he made me wait so he could take a picture of it. I put my shirt back on and then the three of us original folks went to McDs while the others went for sushi. I just kept looking at it. I'm sure me staring down my shirt looked normal, but oh well.
I got back to school and I got the reaction "why would you get that done", and the fact that I don't wear low cut shirts made them question why I would want something no one will see. It's not for everyone! It's for me! Taking care of it wasn't that hard. Cleaning, salt soaks just normal cleaning procedures. It's been almost four months and it's still beautiful. It's been through hell and back in mosh pits, and still hasn't come out... so I'm happy. Not to mention parents still haven't seen it. I've definitely become a surface piercing fan. They look so cool. I'm sure I'll be getting more in the future. This one hurt, but it was definitely worth it!
