One, because I love hands and two, because I just love piercings and have a rather high pain tolerance. I always used to play with the web between my right thumb and pointer finger, and found it entertaining until one day the brilliant idea of an actual piercing occurred to me. The actual idea didn't work too well though, seeing as I had never been exposed to such a thing before.
I probably didn't realize that piercing didn't stop with facial features until I was in about 7th or 8th grade, as I stumbled across a bme-like site. I finally realized that my dream of this piercing might one day come true!
I searched around, and asked people if they had ever heard such a thing, and got general opinions of the piercing from close friends. Turns out I wasn't the only uninformed one of my bunch. In 9th grade I finally decided to really get into it and dig up some relevant information. This was when I attempted the procedure for the first time. I figured, "hey, theres nothing important right there...right?" and off I went. I whipped out an old sewing needle and started stabbing. I quickly noted my inability to keep the hand being pierced steady enough and decided to find out more information. I found that there are some nerves in certain places in this area, and that I really dint know much about healing procedures, and was glad I hadn't gone through with it.
That summer, the summer after my 9th grade year, I went to a girl scout travel camp with a few of my friends. Another one of us was a fan of piercings too and I discussed my idea with her. "That's sooo cool! Definitely go for it!" Score. My first positive response. That night we went and bought a sewing kit, eager to get it over and done with before we had to go home. As I sat on our couch and persisted with a needle, an ice cube, and some patience, she tried to pierce her tongue with an extra needle (but thats another story). I got the needle through the top layer of skin every time, but could not get it through the tougher, bottom layer on my palm. There was not even any pain, even before I got the ice. I decided maybe it was just my nerves, and if the area was numb maybe I could get the needle to go all the way through. I had no such luck.
It was not until this year, my sophomore year of high school that I dedicated myself to my task. One day, I prettymuch just said to myself, "it's gonna happen...tonight." I thought maybe I would use a stapler, quick and easy, but I chickened out. I carried a needle around with me all day, strategizing , planning. That night at dinner, I left the table and went into the bathroom. Running cold water over my hand and the needle, I made an attempt. I would have been successful, but who isn't going to notice a new needle sticking through her daughter's hand at the dinner table? From that moment on I knew I was finally ready. With a big smile across my face I headed back to the table, eagerly anticipating arriving back at home.
Upon our arrival, I sterilized my needle, washed my hand, had a glass of ice water handy and established my studio. Sitting on my bed I decided whatever happened was totally worth it, never having stuck to one idea for this long. I took it slow, being careful and cautious. The first layer of skin went easily, and I eased the needle through the bottom layer, pushing up form the bottom of my hand as well to ensure a straight hole. At last! This was probably one of the most exciting moments of my life. I made sure the needle was through securely, then took a shower. All through my shower there was no pain or swelling. When I was through with my shower I quickly took out the needle (this did not feel too good, though I wouldn't say it was terribly painful either) and put in an old piercing earring of mine. Then, I sat there gazing at my hand with glee.
Though I took out the piercing the next morning, I was extremely proud of my actions, and have no regrets concerning them. In fact, the next night I pierced the web between my middle and pointer fingers, with similarly pleasant results. I don't know that I would reccomend this procedure for everyone, since it is possibly rather dangerous. Though I know that hand piercings aren't usually considered to be a big deal, and that most are in fact done at home, I would just like to say that for anyone who is considering getting this done, or doing it, NO WORRIES, but do be careful, and do read up on things before going of and becoming a piercing artist. :) On another note, even if you find the piercing doesn't satisfy you, both of mine have healed up perfectly, no scar tissue, and no evidence of a puncture. Happy piercing!
