The road to getting my nape pierced is a bit longer than most of my other piercings. I never thought of getting a nape done until I saw them on BME. I jokingly told my Girlfriend at the time that I wanted to get it done. She simply said "NO". I was of course only joking about it at the time, and wasn't intending to do it right then anyway.

A few months time and that would be a completely different situation. So after exhausting my entire list of likable piercings, I was determined to get something else done. Not just for the sake of piercing, but more of a need to get something unusual. I have a very unique ear, but that just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I needed something that was more in your face, something borderline insanity.
So some Saturday night a friend and I decided to head down to Ames, IA. He wanted to get a new tattoo, and I was looking for something to pass some time. After 1.5 hours of driving, and listening to music much to loud to conserve hearing, we arrived. After finding a parking spot about 1 mile down the road we started our walk to the Asylum. At that time it was decided that I was going to get a nape piercing.
Being that it was the first week of collage being in session the place was packed with people. There were a few people waiting for tattoos and a bunch getting various parts of their anatomy pierced. My friend looked thru flash for something that he liked, but came up with nothing that interested him. I on the other hand was dead set on getting my nape pierced. I sat and watched thru the window into the piercing room as some young girl got her tongue pierced, and waited.
When the young girl was finished with her piercing she emerged from the room, and headed to her friends, and the piercer was free. After selling some jewelry to some other young guy, and arranging for someone else to get a tattoo, the time had come for him to ask me what had brought me there. I simply asked if they would do a nape. He stopped for a second then asked "the back of the neck?" I said that that was the one, and he said that he would but it would cost more than the sale priced twenty dollars for any piercing. I didn't mind it wasn't about the money anyway.
He had some questions, like what size barbell I wanted him to use, and what in the hell I was thinking. Once I got sat down in the piercing room we began to talk about placement, and a convention that the piercer had just gotten home from. When the girls it the lobby saw that someone was once again in the room they all gathered around the window to see what it was I was about to get pierced. When the piercer started to draw the lines on my neck one of them said in a fairly loud voice "o my God that is going to hurt".
After calling in some people to take a look at the marks to insure the piercing from being crooked. I was ready to go, with a pillow in hand the piercer put the clamps on my neck. He lined up the needle and in a very slow but steady push it went thru my skin. So there I was with a needle in my neck, and outside the room right next to the window was a girl dry heaving in disgust with what she had just witnessed. I was already proud of my new piercing. He inserted the jewelry with no problems, even though he had insisted that the jewelry was a "bitch" to get in.
After a bit of cleanup work on the neck he handed me a mirror, and had me take a look at my new addition. I loved it, it was so unique so in your face in a odd sort of way. He asked me if I needed advice on aftercare, being as I had so many piercings before I walked thru the door, I told him that I didn't. He also asked if I needed and sea salt, and I told him about my stash at home. We talked for a little while about the convention that he had been to, and about suspensions. He expressed to me that he loves to do some non-standard things; seeing as it is a collage town most people are only getting the mainstream piercings done there.
After a few minutes of conversation it was time for me to leave, with a paper towel taped to my neck. We walked the mile back to my car and took off, leaving my piercer to get back to his regular work piercing tongues, eyebrows, and navels.
It's been a few weeks since I had this done now, and it's healing fairly well. It's in a hard to reach spot, and limited visibility makes it hard to clean. It's still a bit sore, but not as much as it was the first few days. The comments about the piercing were mostly of disgust, but that won't change my mind. I love my nape!
