(WARNING: Before you read this, please let me remind you that doing you own piercing can be dangerous, I would recommend that you have all piercings done professionally.)
At A Glance Author Courtney Contact midnitebluzz@hotmail.com When Six months ago Ok, while maybe it wasn't the smartest thing to do but I did it. One day I decided to pierce the web of my hand. Actually, when discussing self-piercing with my friends, one of my friends and I thought we should do the same piercing and then we'd match. It all started when her boyfriend pierced his own nipple (but that doesn't really have to much do with my story) and that really got me into the whole idea of self piercing. I'd never really though about doing it myself before.
Well, we were being completely stupid and no one even did any research on this type on piercing. Adding to the stupidity, I volunteered to bring in some old ear piercing studs I had. We agreed to do the whole thing in school. The next day I went to school with the piercing studs and we tried to figure out when to do it.
As it would happen, our Science teacher let us get up and go work with friends for some project that day. We discussed thing and me, and with my love of stick needles in myself, got elected to go first. So gritting my teeth, I shoved the piercing stud through my hand web. Pretty much the whole class was watching, so I don't know how my teacher didn't see what I was doing. It didn't hurt much at all, but it felt weird and I had a bit of hard time getting it through.
Finally I got it through, and I had a cute (if not crooked) hand piercing. It was something I couldn't exactly fix, so I decided I could live with it. With that done, I asked my friend to do it. But she backed out, saying her parents would find out and they'd kill her. (I must say, it was a smart move on her part)
I made it through the rest of the day just fine, messing with it and showing it some of my friends. That night I had a some what had time taking a shower because the back of the piercing stud kept catching in my hair and on my shower poof. Other than that, it don't get caught on too many things. At school I had a lot of fun showing it to people. I got mixed reactions as some thought it was cool, others thought I was stupid, and some were too grossed out to look at it. My hand swelled a little, but it was barely noticeable. I could still use it like I normally did, but I didn't relish the thought of trying to wear gloves. I planed to get a small ring for it because the stud was just an annoyance. I cleaned it when I remembered and it was doing just fine. About 3 days later my mom saw it and completely freaked out. Needless to say, the piercing stud was promptly removed from my hand. I was a bit relieved because the stud kept catching on things and it did not feel that great. It healed just fine and I can't even see a scar. (By the time my mom made me take it out, I was ready to take it out myself. When I did the piercing I should have had a ring or even a labret)
In hindsight, I an see how very stupid my actions were. I didn't know anything about those types of piercings, I didn't clean any of my materials, I didn't use a proper stud for the piercing (Ear stud were definitely not meant for your hand), and I didn't clean it often or with the right stuff. So I'm very lucky it didn't get infected. I really feel stupid for doing this with no idea of what I was doing. I suppose all kids do stupid things at one time or another, but this was pretty bad. I get embarrassed every time my mom tells people what I did, because I know it was a stupid thing to do. If I ever decide to do it myself again, I'll be a hell of a lot more careful than I was before.
Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling or preaching, but I just wanted to make sure I included everything. Please try to get it done professionally or if you can't, make sure you use clean materials, do research about that type of piercing, use the proper stud (I bet it makes a world of difference), and be sure to clean it well. I was really stupid for doing what I did the way I did it and I hope others can do a better job than me. This is probably a piercing that you can do yourself and it'll come out just fine, if you take the right steps. (Though nothing's better than having it done professionally) One day I plan to have it done professionally one day and I'll see how that turns out.
