Since discovering BME I have become interested in surface piercings. The pictures of hand web piercings intrigued me so I though I'd get my newly discovered and fantastic piercer to have a go! This was to be my first surface piercing and I wasn't sure how my body was going to react. But I thought that hand web piercings look beautiful, so I had to give it a go. As it turns out, I now have an addiction for surface piercings. (I think many of you out there can understand the attraction!)

I live in the U.K and it is hard to get hold of surface staple bars here so I decided upon a curved micro bar because I didn't want there to be a lot of movement in the piercing which would lead to migration, and thought a longer straight bar or a ball closure ring would increase that risk. Also I think that hand webs look quite ugly with big rings sticking out of them (I also think the same with eyebrow rings). My piercer agreed and luckily he had one bar left (a sweet little blue one).

Anyway, on with the story! The piercing itself hardly hurt at all (the exiting of the needle, facing into my palm hurt the most). My piercer did use numbing spray, and I am very glad that he did; I think I would have been in agony if he hadn't. Inserting the jewellery didn't hurt one bit and it looked fantastic! If you haven't had your hand web pierced you wont understand this, but looking down and seeing a needle sticking outta your hand is the oddest experience. I kinda wanted to say 'forget the jewellery' and go shock some people with that - ah well!

I wasn't that scared before hand about getting it done, and my piercer had done a few before so I think that gave me confidence.

Anyway, on the first day I was a bit sore and obviously there were some crusties. I had my left hand pierced to eliminate awkwardness with writing (after all I was starting University the next week). I couldn't use my hand much the first couple of days, but after that it was fine.

My general cleaning routine to begin with was to soak my hand at least three times a day in hot salt water, followed by a piercing solution (ask your piercer) and antiseptic cream. I kept my hand bandaged for the first week (apart from taking it off to clean!), which I think, helped a lot. It kept all the nasty bacteria away whilst the initial healing process occurred. Since then I have been cleaning it twice a day with the piercing solution. I think if I ever lost this piercing I would have to march back to the studio and get it done again. I love it so much. It has become one of my favourites.

Anyway, it's healed up in less than a month, and both my piercer and myself are over the moon about it. My piercer took some pics for his portfolio and everything!!! I highly recommend this piercing to anyone, but a word of warning: be careful if you have a tendency to run your hands through your hair. Also you have to be really careful with the aftercare, it's a well known piercing to get infected. I think that the hand web is one of the least painful piercings to get done, and if you can manage the bellybutton (which I consider one of the more painful) then this will be a breeze.

What I do think is funny is some peoples reactions to my hand web. A few people (generally those who have piercings themselves) thing it's unusual and beautiful, and others just think it looks plain nasty. Well each to there own I suppose. It's my body and I think it looks amazing.

What I can't understand are people who would pierce their hand web (or any other part of their body) with safety pins or ear piercing guns or any other crazy object. I am assuming that since these people know nothing about what to use to pierce themselves with, they also have no clue how to look after their new piercings, which is why so many migrate. Oh well. Their body, not mine.

Anyway, since getting my hand web done, I have gone on to get my nape pierced (experience coming soon) and it seems I take really well to surface piercings (better than 'normal' piercings) and I have had no trouble.

Oh and I also have my lobes, tragus, bellybutton, nose, lip, bellybutton, nipples, labia done twice and tongue done three times and wanting more still. In the near future I want to get a Madison, conch, rook, daith, and maybe my wrist and my toe

Maybe I will be satisfied one day. Or maybe not!
