I had met a friend during the summer and she had a Vertical Clitoral Hood piercing. She had been talking about it for a while and then she showed it to me when she was coming out of the shower. I wasn't sure what to expect. The idea of a genital piercing really did scare me and I expected it to look pretty awful. Luckily, it was small, discreet, feminine and a bit dangerous looking. I can say that at that moment I was very intrigued by the way it looked. I had a ton of questions for her: Can you feel it? Do you pee the same? Does it get caught in your underwear? What happens when you get your period? Just those kinds of questions. She said that everything was pretty normal and that she forgets that it is there most of the time. I was intrigued and excited about it and could not stop thinking about it for the rest of the summer.

My friend who had the VCH and I parted ways once the summer ended and we didn't talk as much because we lived on opposite sides of the country. I began to chicken out about the piercing because everyone I asked about it said that they were pretty grossed out by the idea. I know I shouldn't have taken their opinions to heart, but I did. It wasn't until October that my friend decided to come to California to visit me therefore sparking my interest once again and easing my concerns about the VCH. It was because of her encouragement that I decided to get one as well.

We drove to the piercing shop on a Thursday afternoon where I had gotten my nose pierced a few years previously. I was expecting to have a male piercer but to my surprise there was a female piercer on duty. I asked her that if she pierced VCHs and she said that she did. I did not find her very friendly, but I knew that I had gone there for a purpose and I was not going to wimp out. I told her that I wanted a very small barbell and asked about scarring etc. She said that the genital area will not have any raised scars so not to worry about that. What she had recommended was a 14 G 1/2 in. barbell. That's what I chose with pink and white little balls (I know, I'm girly). I went back to the piercing room with my friend where I removed my pants but kept my panties on and just moved them to the side. She had me lie back on a table where I help my friends hand and stared at the ceiling. I didn't glance at any of the supplies because I did not want to fuel my anxiety. She marked the place where the needle would go through and asked what I thought. I was so nervous that I quickly said "Yeah, that's fine" without much thought. She then cleaned the area using alcohol and iodine. Let me tell you right now that the alcohol buuurns!! I must say that the alcohol was the worst part. She then said, "I'm going to let you know what I'm doing, right now I'm just going to put the needle under the hood. I'm not going to pierce you just yet." The needle under the hood was pretty uncomfortable! She told me to take a breath and that's when she pierced me. It was over in less than a second and once the needle went through there was no pain. I didn't even notice her put the jewelry in until she told me. It was pretty easy.

Immediately, I put my jeans back on and sat down and crossed my legs. I didn't feel it at all. Cleaning it was pretty easy. Just the salt water solution and anti- bacterial soap in the shower. I didn't have any pain afterward and bleeding was minimal. I'm very happy with my piercing and I recommend it to everyone.

Here are a few downsides to the piercing as well that I want to address. Most of these are thankfully pretty minor. First, you do have to wipe differently. I hope I'm not too graphic, but you do have to watch out that you don't pull or snag on the barbell. For the first few days you are aware of the piercing. For about a week you do feel it healing. It doesn't itch and it's not painful but it does tickle a bit. I was fine sitting in class at my university while it healed and it didn't really change any of my normal activity. If I wiggled around to much in my seat, the barbell did move around as well. I was aware that it moved and did have to excuse myself to go to the restroom to put the barbell back in place. My piercer told me to avoid sexual activity for the next six weeks and I believe that is what most people would have a problem with. I did not have a boyfriend at the time and I don't sleep around so I wasn't to worried about the next few months. Lastly, if you have a silver bullet, using it will be much, much noisier having the bullet vibrate on the metal of the barbel can get uncomfortable.
