I was walking on St. Marks Place with a friend of mine a while back, and out of nowhere he said he wanted to get a PA right then and there. I was shocked, but had no intention of dissuading him. So we went to a nearby piercing parlor. He paid the fee and then disappeared into a back room. The only thing I heard was him yell "Oh my god!". and a couple minutes later he emerged, saying it hurt like hell right when it happened, but then otherwise it was no big deal.

So I became intrigued with the idea of getting one of my own, but I didn't want to go to a parlor. I wanted to do it myself. So I started reading up on it, looking at pictures/video, and purchased a couple of piercing kits online. I had fooled around with trying to do it myself a few times, inserting a receiving tube, trying to stick the needle in, but I would always hit a spot where the tissue seemed impenetrable, or it just hurt to much. In the meantime, I bought a penlight, which I would shine through the receiving tube in order to see exactly where it was when you were sticking in the needle, as well as some numbing lidocaine. I had no experience with any kind of piercing before, so as far as the act itself, I was a complete newbie apart from all the pretty careful research I had done.

Anyway, after several halfhearted of attempting to do the piercing, one night I decided to try again, with no expectation of succeeding (the experience itself is kind of a turn on). I nevertheless took some precautions - maybe not as many as I should have. I boiled the needle, poured boiling water over the rubber glove I was using for my left hand. I didn't use a glove for my right hand - too difficult to maneuver - but I poured rubbing alcohol all over it. The lube I used for the receiving tube wasn't sterile, nor was the lidocaine. Probably a little risky in retrospect. So I started the usual routine with the receiving tube and penlight, which is very hard to maneuver, and it took at least 15 minutes before I got it situated. So I started sticking the needle in, again expecting to fail, but somehow it started to go right in, as opposed to every other time before. It kept going further and further in, and then suddenly it was through. It really didn't hurt at all, nor did I hear a pop or anything like that. The placement was maybe a little further to the right than most PAs, but not abnormally so. Anyway, I started pulling the needle out, and tried to stick the ring in, when blood suddenly starting gushing everywhere. i started freaking out, and ran to a bathtub and just starting squeezing as hard as I could to stop the bleeding. After about 5 minutes it stopped, and so I tried inserting the ring again, and then the blood started gushing again. So I squeezed some more, this time longer until the bleeding stopped again. I tried getting the ring through a 3rd time, which was difficult. It took about 10 minutes to get it through. Not painful really, but irritating. Once it was through, it was finally all set. What a relief. I then started pouring rubbing alcohol over everything. I applied a lot of antibacterial soap onto the ring and moved it in and out. I forced myself to pee a couple times too. A couple weird scary things happened I didn't mention. After it was through, a little while later there was kind of an internal bleeding, where a thin little trail of blood about 3 inches long like a little rivulet *under* the skin starting spreading, but the rivulet went away after about a half hour and it was fine. I think all of these somewhat frightening aspects of the experience should probably speak to the idea that you should do this with a professional.

2 MONTHS LATER: No infection. It was pierced at a 14 gauge (maybe why the needle went in so easily) and stretched to a 10, which was more comfortable. There's pros and cons to having it. The pros are that sex-related stuff is more pleasurable, though it also can be more painful too. The downside (apart from the aforementioned pain) is that it screwed up my lifelong sleeping pattern. i always liked sleeping on my stomach best but now it's a painful position.

1 YEAR LATER: I've actually managed to stretch it up to a 0. I've even gotten it to 00 but it's not possible to pee because the metal is too thick and blocks the urethra. Right now having it it totally normal and it is not painful to sleep on my stomach or anything. Truth be told, I am kind of tired of it at this point. Now, not having it is exciting to me. Funny how that works. The inconveniences are peeing, which even still can be pretty messy, and going through a metal detector when air traveling. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I will say I am glad I did it overall though.
