I've been keen on body piercings for years, having had my right nipple done in a studio as a present to myself for my 30th birthday. My ex-wife actually tossed her cookies when I showed it to her just before the guests arrived for my birthday party, of course I showed every single one of them and not a single one barfed.

Each lasted a couple of months before finally rejecting or growing out for reasons I cannot comprehend. I used 14g CBR's each time, made sure the piercing was relatively deep and was kept clean. But that's another story.
A couple of months ago my girlfriend was getting her nipple pierced and I spoke to the piercer about my lorum problem. He suggested a PA for a genital piercing as the likelihood of rejection was low. I'd always wanted a PA but the psychological barrier was definitely there. When you consider the mass of the glans you can't help but think it hurts like all get out. It wasn't until the piercer explained to me that the skin where the piercing occurs is very, very thin and the nerves that run in the area are designed for another purpose, ie pleasure and not pain. He also said most men claim little to no pain at all and they heal very well. I discussed it with my girl, who after having her nipple pierced wants everything on her body pierced because of the heightened sexual sensations. She thought it was a great idea.
I did some research, looked at some pictures, read some articles and was ultimately convinced it was not as frightening as I'd initially thought. I booked an appointment to have it done professionally but while renovating my bathroom discovered I still had sterilized sealed needles left from my previous piercing experiments.
So, there I sat 42 years old, gloved, washed, ready and wondering if I was a having a mid life crisis. After cleaning myself well, I placed the receiving tube in the urethral opening, pressing it from the inside, against the desired site of the piercing, the small triangle where the shaft and glans meets, to get an idea what the target would look like.
I opened the needle package and of course the receiving tube fell out as I had lubricated it to make the entry into the urethral opening a little less uncomfortable. I placed the tube back in, held it and my penis firmly with my right hand while trying to twist the whole package about 90 degrees so I could see the piercing site. I picked up the 14 gauge needle with my left hand, placed the point of the needle at the target site, took a deep breath and pushed. When I woke up..ok, just kidding I didn't pass out, but it is a real possibility.
I slowly pushed the needle through. I prefer to pierce slowly so that I can recognize and reduce collateral damage. In this case, I wanted to make sure I was getting the needle inside the receiving tube as at first I had thought I had missed the receiving tube, but soon discovered that all was well.
As soon as I could tell the needle tip had cleared the urethral opening I removed the receiving tube and picked up my 14 gauge ¾" CBR. The jewelry easily chased the needle through the freshly pierced flesh. I put the bead into the ring and it was done.
Overall the experience was painless, not a twitch and very little blood. The worst part was inserting the receiving tube into the urethral opening, which caused a little discomfort. Then again, it's not unexpected as that is usually an exit and not an entrance. It is a little disconcerting, more psychologically than anything, seeing blood at the urethral opening of your penis. After all, that's your gear and blood there can never be good.
I did get occasional bleeding over the first 24 hours, there's been no pain or swelling to speak of. It did sting to urinate the first couple of times but that subsided fairly soon as well. So far I'm not getting any dribbling from the piercing site but if not careful, my urine stream looks much like a garden sprinkler.
The piercing is still quite new at this point, but it is my intention to stretch to an 8 gauge over the next couple of months. I used the 14 as it was a left over piece of jewelry from other endeavors. My girlfriend thinks it's pretty sexy looking and can't wait to see if it makes a difference in sexual sensation.
I wouldn't recommend self piercing for everyone. I've always had steady hands, high pain threshold and calm demeanor under pressure, so it doesn't bother me. If you think you'll panic, faint, drop things, pay the pros.
