Well, I did it. I actually decided to get a piercing (other than my ears - which have closed up). In my late 30's and maintaining a "professional appearance" is important in order to do little things like pay the mortgage, car payment, and eat. Body mods have always been something that has excited me and I have been through a few self piercings. I had my ear pierced in high school (self done on a dare), both nipples pierced in college (drunken idea), and a self-done nostril. Today, you can walk down the street and see any number of cool looking piercings and I thought that it would be time to start back into this fascinating and intriguing form of expression.
At A Glance Author William Contact willy_shave@yahoo.com When A month ago Artist Romy Studio Adrenaline Location Tucson, AZ I had researched the piercing that I wanted and researched the different studios. I had a couple of recommendations for Adrenaline about 100 miles away in Tucson and decided to go in and see what the place looked like. I travel there about once a week on business and had some time to kill. Mind you, this was a recon mission - I had no intention of walking out with a piercing - just there to check things out.
I was greeted somewhat skeptically by Romy the piercer. Soon enough, I was very comfortable talking with Romy. He actually was very cool and made me feel very comfortable as he explained all of the details of which he was quite knowledgeable. To the casual onlooker, it probably looked a bit peculiar, me wearing a tie with my black Mercedes parked out front talking to Romy with lots of piercings and tats – not to mention that I'm probably about the same age as his parents. I finally asked when he could work me into his schedule (the place was empty). My heart raced. He told me to have a seat and we got the paperwork out of the way. I was a little embarrassed because I was a little, um, excited, if you know what I mean. I told him this and he blew it off.
I was laying down on the table and he was explaining the finer points of one-time use equipment and sterilization. Then he began to disinfect the area. (Once you have a guy handling your package for a couple of minutes – my earlier concerns of "excitement" were no more) Finally he was going to put the receiving tube in... That was a little uncomfortable - not painful. He then asked me to take a deep breath in and hold it. I felt a little pressure, a pause, and a little more pressure. He told me to exhale. After a few seconds, he said, "Wow, I've never seen anyone this calm before."
I am not exaggerating – this was a totally painless experience. The receiving tube sucked but the piercing itself was a total breeze. I laid there for a few minutes while he cleaned it up. Finally it was time to look. Wow – way cool! We chose a 10ga CBR and it looked incredible! He explained aftercare, told me to drink a lot of water over the next couple of weeks, wrapped my package in a surgical glove and I was on my way.
I had about a 2 hour drive to get home for the day. When I got there, my bladder was beckoning to be emptied. OK, the moment of truth, Romy had given me some "pointers" on how best to approach the subject of pissing without making a huge mess. Following his pointers, I was getting ready for "some burning and stinging" but first I had to remove the glove. This was a little shocking – it was full of blood. I don't mean a little damp – I mean at least three of the fingers were full. I carefully began the process of pissing and, I might add, that I was able to get most of it into the bowl (I have since learned that sitting is probably easiest). There was absolutely no stinging. None. I took a warm shower followed by a salt soak and that was the last of the blood.
To say the least, this whole experience was entirely painless. It has been 6 weeks now and I have tested the new piercing on my wife. She was quite pleased with the results and for me, it was an entirely new sensation. I still like the way it looks. Not to mention it turns me on thinking about it because it's like I have a little secret that almost nobody knows about. I can't wait to try our different jewelry and I will probably stretch it to an 8 or 6. Romy was great and if you're ever in Tucson, definitely pay him a visit. Also, don't forget to tip!!! I'm deciding on my next adventure – guiche or septum?? It won't be long – that's for sure!
