Many years ago I pierced my left lobe, but marriage and job intervened and the hole closed. Then my wife passed away and I got a new job and decided to change my image a little and reopen the hole. Well one thing led to another and soon I had both nipples pierced - twice! It didn't take much longer to add a few more pieces of jewellery beginning with a tragus and a couple of other small holes in the left ear, then a labret and a small hole in the right. What they say is correct - piercing can become addictive - now have a small tunnel in the left ear!

My regular piercer and good friend, Frankie, who owns Zoo Body Art (a Tattoo and Piercing studio here in Kuala Lumpur), is a fantastic practitioner - very quick, very gentle, very professional with his advice both before and after any piercing, and very concerned that everything is sterile (autoclaved). When I got my nipples, labret and tragus done by him, he had never done a PA before - and in the past two years, I never thought to ask him if he had 'got the experience' yet. That is, until a month ago when I was hanging out at his studio and the subject came up - and yes! he had done quite a few already! So how about doing mine?
Well, Frankie was waiting on his new shipment of jewellery - we will do it in a month, he told me. So I had a month to stew - and a month to revisit the experiences on BME to see if I still wanted to go through with it. Then two days ago, Frankie called to say the jewellery had arrived, and that afternoon I turned up at his studio, not without some trepidation about piercing the old man, but determined the time had come! I had initially thought to go with 10ga but Frankie said I should start with 12ga first and gradually work up - less invasion of tissue that way - sounded sensible enough. Go for it, man!
After sterilising the jewellery and showing me the new needle in its sterile pack, Frankie had me lie on the couch and drop my trousers. After a short examination, he squirted with some form of disinfectant, and as I relaxed, pushed the needle in. Didn't think to ask if he had any numbing cream or stuff like that! I had heard that the sensation was something like a crab nip, a jellyfish sting, a very sharp sensation - but honestly, Frankie was so quick, I hardly had time to feel anything - certainly on a scale of one to ten where my nipple piercing was a 10, this one came out at about a 4! Certainly needed no numbing cream! The ring following the needle was only a minor tug - and I was done! A bit more spray with antiseptic and cleaning of the blood, a piece of sterile gauze wrapped around the old man and my pants were back on and I was ready to leave.
A couple of hours later - courtesy mainly of the 'going home' traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur - and I was home and checking the new addition. Luckily I was wearing black pants, because there was quite a bit of blood soaking my underwear. (I had read that was often an outcome of a PA piercing and was prepared for it)
So I cleaned the old man up, put on a new dressing and a plastic wrapper. So far no pain - just a bit of blood. That evening, the dreaded urination - had heard that it would sting, but I actually had no problem - probably because the blood was still flowing - not having coagulated and dried. And the spray - well just a little wider spread than usual.
Because of the blood flow, I re-bandaged the head with tissue, wrapped the whole in plastic and secured with a rubber band. No problem that night but when I removed these in the morning there was still a blood flow, though reduced. After cleaning, I wrapped on new bandaging and went out for the day. No problems - and even though last night there was still a bit of blood flow, by this morning it had stopped. It did ooze a little after urinating, and the lunch-time check showed the bleeding had stopped completely. Now I am starting the salt-soak regime.
Would I recommend getting a PA? Some people are lucky and have little bleeding - seems I was a bleeder, but there was no pain after the initial puncturing, and I was able to cope with the bleeding and carry on as normal. Now that the bleeding has stopped, I can't wait for the next few weeks to be over and get the old man back in action. I guess if you are prepared for a little inconvenience at the beginning, then go for it. I love the look, am getting the feel and I get a high just thinking about the new addition - sure beats a couple of rings in the ear! Thanks, Frankie!
