I had wanted to get a piercing for some time, but I was never quite sure just what I wanted. I decided that my piercing should be just for me and that a captive bead ring (CBR) at the bottom of my sack would be a nice first piercing. Off to my favorite tattoo shop I went.

My shop is Lone Wolf Body Art (Village) in Nashville, TN. I would often talk to the piercer, Brandon Jones, while I was in there for tattoos. Over time I asked many questions about scrotal piercings, or hafadas, and decided that I definitely wanted one. After I made my decision to do it I told Brandon what I wanted. He impressed me right away with a great piece of advice. I had wanted the ring to go, say, East to West, but he recommended North to South for comfort. This is something I hadn't even considered but I am glad he mentioned it. I made my appointment for that weekend.

I was very excited about my upcoming piercing. I wondered how bad it would hurt to run a steel needle through my nut-sack. I wondered how nice the piercing would look. I wondered what exactly was in my sack that might come streaming out. I never thought about such things before.

So, the day comes and I arrive on time. Brandon pulls out the jewelry and heads to the autoclave. I fill out the paperwork, bullshit with some of the tattoo artists, and wait while Brandon pierces a couple of eyebrows. When my turn comes Brandon waves me back and I see all of the tools and the ring on a tray. He explained to me the sterilization procedures and opened the packages for everything he was going to use. I just sat on the table wondering when to pull my pants down. No sense in pulling it out too early and getting cold, if you know what I mean.

Finally Brandon says, "OK, stand up and drop your pants." Here we go. Down go the pants and Brandon marks my scrotum with a few dots of ink. "The most important thing," he says, "is getting the points to match so the piercing is straight." After he is satisfied with the marking he clamps the appropriate dots and lets me examine where the piercing will be. I am pleased and give him the thumbs up.

"OK, go ahead and lean back now," Brandon said. I lean back on the table, which is adjusted to about a 45-degree angle. "Take a deep breath and let it out. Then, take another deep breath and I will pierce you, ok?" I nod and take my first breath. I let it out, knowing that I am seconds away from being impaled in a place that has the potential to be extremely painful. I take the second breath and watch Brandon's hand start to move.

I would like to slow down just for a moment here and talk about the pain. Brandon had told me it only hurt for a second. Well, I corrected him and said it hurt for about 2.3 seconds. When the needle first pierced the skin, it was not bad at all. But it seemed to hurt a bit more when it hit the inside of the skin on the other side, and then the most painful part was the exit. The exit itself actually made me tighten my thigh muscles and grit my teeth. But just as soon as it started it was over. He put the ring on the needle and threaded it through. That part involved no pain whatsoever. He put the ball on, clamped it tight with pliers, and told me to have a look. I stood up and turned toward the mirror: nice. I was very impressed with the positioning, the size of the ring, and its overall look on me. I knew I would be getting more piercings.

I think of my first piercing experience as extremely successful. I knew exactly what was going to happen ahead of time and there were no surprises. I had the utmost confidence in Brandon and that in itself made me very comfortable. His directions for aftercare were simple and I have had no problems at all. He even scheduled a time for me to come back in so he could check on the healing process.

If I could offer any advice to someone considering this type of piercing it would be this: one, have some idea of what you want and where. Two, go talk to your piercer; he or she may have ideas or thoughts that you had not considered. Three, don't worry about the pain. It does hurt, but only for 2.3 seconds and the outcome is worth it.
