My fascination with the world of body modification I believe was sparked with a trip to a water park when I was 12 years old. I was captivated by all of the tattoos and piercings that I saw while I was there. Even though I thought they were the coolest thing, my parents always frowned upon modified people by saying that they were "strange" and their modifications were ugly. I know they weren't alone in their opinion, being that I live in a small town where nonconformity was frowned on and those with modifications were singled out. When I was 15, I was feeling rebellious, like many others of the age group, and I was looking for a way to secretly modify myself. Prior to this, my mother had gotten her navel pierced because she said it was cheaper than having surgery. I asked for an ear piercing, the verdict was immediately "NO". So I started looking around for a piercing I could do myself that would be secret. This is where BME came in.

I was surfing the internet one night and I ran across BME's website, and was immediately drawn to the idea of piercing my genitals. My first reason, I could hide it from anyone I didn't want to know I was pierced. My second reason was that I thought it looked cool and it could be functional later in my life time. I had initially decided on a frenum piercing, because most experiences I read claimed to be relatively painless. I went to my basement bathroom one night after acquiring a large sewing needle, roughly a 14 gauge, and a handful of 14 gauge barbells. To make a long story short, I had a frenum piercing for about an hour, because I never was able to get it straight. Upon discovering this, I went back to BME and decided that I would try piercing my scrotum. In the summer of 2003, I went back down into my basement bathroom, found the needle I had modified for the frenum piercing and decided I was going to pierce myself.

That night, I sat down on the toilet seat grabbed the needle, eyeballed where I wanted the piercing to go, and I pushed. It was the most intense feeling of my life. I didn't really feel much pain, but more like a burning. I ended up piercing my scrotum a total of three times that night, but only able to put the jewelry into two of the holes. My family flew down to Florida that December for Christmas, and at the time, I was afraid the metal detectors would catch me, so I took out the piercings for the 4 days we were there. When we got home, the holes were completely closed up. I managed to put my old needle through one of the holes again, but it the piercing became infected and I had to take it out.

In September of 2004, I decided that I couldn't stand not being modified, so, I set out to pierce my scrotum yet again. I still had the same needle, which I know is possibly the worse thing you can have, and I went to my bathroom with the intent of piercing for the third time. This time, it hurt. Since I had already pierced my scrotum of which were stretched to 8 and 10 gauge, there was a lot of scar tissue to go through. I pushed the first piercing through with the aid of some pliers, and put the jewelry through. The initial feeling of exhilaration that I felt the first time was gone. I pierced myself a scrotal ladder that night with a total of six barbells. About a month later, I could see that three were rejecting, so I took them out and waited for the remaining three to heal. The three healed nicely, but there is a large amount of scar tissue left behind.

I suppose the needle I used had a lot to do with my healing problems, as well as the scar tissue being built up. I was young and stupid three months ago when I did the piercing, but I think that it was worth it. Piercing myself has shown me that I don't want to live my life as a conformist. Piercing was possibly the best thing I have ever done for myself, because it liberated my desire to be rebellious, but at the same time, only my girlfriend, myself, and the readers of this article know about them.

I must say though, that those who are interested in this piercing, I recommend you go for it. Don't do it yourself the way I did, because I made myself susceptible to massive infections that, easily could have killed me. There is no real drawback to this piercing being that only the people you want knowing about them can know, and, if you get more than one, you hear a gentle rattling sound when you walk. If you still aren't if this piercing isn't for you, keep in mind that I haven't been with a girl who hasn't loved them.
