Well it all started off with me wanting another piercing. I am an 18 year old male (17 at the time) and I already had my eye-brow done (which I took out), spaced orbital area (kind of like a dermal punch) and belly button, but I needed more. I had to get something that my parents wouldn't freak out about..or possibly see. They were not big fans of piercings at all, but I have loved them ever since I saw my first eye-brow ring. So after a lot of thought on what I could get pierced, I figured that I really wanted to pierce my hafada, but I didn't really want someone else to do it (the thought of a stranger holding my unit kind of bothered me), plus there was a serious lack of money that I could afford to spend, but that large adrenaline rush associated with piercings, and I actually liked the idea of doing it myself. The first thing that I did was research into the piercing, possible side effects (for all i knew, if I went too far, there were going to be no children in the future), the correct placement and how it should be done professionally. I had out the medical dictonary to check placements of certain vital things in that area and decided on a sutible location for my new piercing.
The methods which I used were by far not the most safe or sterile, but I did my best but using rubbing alcohol and iodine. I decided that using a safety pin would give me the best results, a small hole would equal little pain and I didn't believe that I could get the jewelery in directly after the piercing because of the pain, so I would instead be able to close the pin to hold it secure in place, and I must tell you, it worked pretty well.
I even made my own clamps, created out of a new pair of kitchen tongs, which I used a elastic band to put pressure onto it to hold together
So I decided exactly where I wanted it, put the "clamp" on and prepared for the "needle" and began to pierce myself. I have later discovered that it proabably would have been less painfull to go quickly, but no I decided to do it ever so slow. So I did it, i got the pin through after about 15 minutes of pain, but then I looked at it when my skin had settled, and guess what...it wasn't straight at all. So i figured that I could go through it once again. I took the pin out, sterilized it again and redid it. the second time was a bit easier because I knew what to expect.
So I liked where it was and left the pin in over night. the next night i decided to put in my jewelery, and guess what, I couldn't get it through the holes, then to my dismay, I couldn't even get the pin back through and was left with a sore swollen painful area, as well as being pissed off. So i figured fine, give it a day to heal and do it again.
Attempt three worked beautifully, little pain (maybe I was getting better) and it sat perfectly. This time I let it heal for 3 days before attempting to put in the jewelery, and when i attempted..it hurt like hell. The pin was straight, and the ring was a 16g curved barbell, the two didn't go together too well. It took over 30 minutes, lots of pain (more then the piercing) and a little blood (now if you have ever bleed there, it's kind of scary), but I finally got the ring in.
The healing was no problem at all, i followed all the normal hearling and after care instructions that I had been given for my other piercings and after a few days of pain with the pin in, then a few more after trying to get the ring in, it finally went away. it healed up with absolutley no problems. The ring was not rejected and did not grow out and there has been no side effects at all.
It's now been almost a year and I have moved to a 14g tear-drop shapped ring, i love it and have had absolutly no problems with it. People ask why I would do it at all, let alone by myself, but they just don't understand that it was something for me to enjoy and have, and not worry about what others thought. Some people are quite shocked with it and a few girls have been, should I say stunned, at the idea of there being "metal where there isint supposed to be metal" as many pf my friends have said. I have never regretted doing it, even though some people think I am a little crazy for doing it. I have now also added two streched ears, larger streched cartillidge and a tattoo (self design) on my back and I'm still looking to get a tounge and eye-brow ring done. It's always one thing leading to the next, and I love everything that I have.
