In September, a friend of mine named Martha asked me about navel piercing. She knew that I was interested in piercings and things, and wanted to know if I would come and get pierced with her. Over the winter is my kind of time for piercing, so I told her, Sure. We planned to go in October to Ink Link Tattoos and get our respective navels pierced.

Now, my navel is a piercing I had wanted for about a year, so I was pretty gung-ho about it when I agreed to go with her. But there are other piercings I want, too, and the more I kept thinking about it, the more guiche kept floating to the top of the list. Why? I don't know. It just seems like a very interesting piercing to me. Not so many of them around (and doesn't everyone want a "unique" piercing?), in a part of the body that not too many people even give a lot of thought too. I wasn't worried about how it would look, since very few people were ever really going to see it. I wasn't concerned with it increasing my sensitivity—I just assumed it would have no effect. I just really like the concept of the guiche piercing. So, over the next couple of weeks, I changed my mind. I told Martha, and she was very curious about it. She seems like the shy and bashful type, but deep down, she's up for anything.

I read a few of the experiences here on BME, and it seemed like the guiche healed either really well and really quickly, or was terrible. After reading, I still had a couple of questions about the procedure and such, so I emailed the studio, and they got back to me pretty promptly. They could do it with either a captive bead ring or a curved barbell, at 14, 12, or 10 gauge. The cheapest option would cost US$25 total, and since they didn't have stirrups, it would be done doggy-style. I was a little worried about the low price, but the studio has a good reputation, and besides, I'd decided to go with more expensive jewellery anyway.

So the big day finally came. Martha's girlfriend was visiting from Canada, so of course she came, and also Martha's roommate, who just gets a kick out of seeing me pierced in the crotch, and another friend of ours, who was considering having her ears repierced. My girlfriend asked that I not mention it at all to her, and I was fine with that. This kind of hobby is not to everyone's taste, after all. We all went in, and Martha and I filled out our respective paperwork. Our friend with the ears decided to back out. Then we sat back to wait and get nervous. Eventually, after I-don't-know-how-long, I was called back.

My piercer Shorty, whom I was pleasantly surprised to see was wearing a blue BME boy tee shirt. And the guy, true to his name, was short, but definitely cool. I went back, and Martha, bless her heart, went with me. Shorty took all of his stuff out of the autoclave bags, and we were ready to go. They had a dentist's chair, and I knelt on the seat, with my arms resting on the headrest and my face down. This was pretty uncomfortable, so Shorty raised the back a little, so I wasn't arching my back so much. Martha stood at the head of the chair, so I could grasp her hands in mine. Shorty started swabbing me down, and I apologised for not having trimmed too well. I also wondered what would happen if I farted during the procedure. Hey, I was tense, and when I get tense, I fart. He asked me to spread my legs a little more, and marked me up. I didn't check the markings, since I wasn't really too bothered about where it went. I asked Shorty if he'd done many of these, and if they were difficult to do, or difficult to heal. He told me they were relatively easy, very similar to a scrotal piercing, and that he had a scrotal ladder that had healed quite easily. This reassured me.

Then it was needle time. Now, I know there are people out there who like the pain of getting pierced. I am not one of those people. I find getting pierced to be a fairly unpleasant experience, on the whole, and this was no exception. As piercings go, it wasn't so bad, certainly not as bad as an apadravya. The needle went in, and my eyes bugged out, and my sinuses went all funny. It was kind of that can't-breathe feeling when you get kicked right in the seat of the pants, but not quite so long lasting. The jewellery (ten gauge captive bead ring) went in quickly and easily, and we were done. Martha got her navel done, and we headed home.

The car ride home was pretty intense. The ring was vibrating around, and I don't exactly know if it was good breathtaking or bad breathtaking, but it was definitely breathtaking. We arrived back at the dorms, and I cowboy-walked up to my room, everyone laughing at my gait along the way. Then I went to the talent show my school was putting on. The acts were very good, for the most part, but during the bad acts, I was sure I could feel something damp in my pants. Sure enough, after the show I walked gingerly back across campus (accompanied again by much laughter) and found my boxer briefs (the best of both worlds) stained crimson with blood, and little "bloodsicles" hanging off the jewellery. I rushed to the shower and cleaned it all off, and had no real problems with bleeding from then on.

For aftercare, I wash it carefully in the shower with soap, and afterwards dry it with toilet paper and put a little Bactine on the holes. I know Bactine isn't really recommended, but it's never steered me wrong, and I really like the smell. Now, about two months on, it's healed really well. I can walk and sit down like I used to, and I often forget it's even there. It has healed perfectly, and, as I expected, has had really no effect on my sensitivity or anything, which isn't a problem. This is a really fine piercing, and I would say, as always, if you want one, go for it.
