This was my first genital piercing experience. After much deliberation, I decided to try out a simultaneous frenum /lorem combination (essentially a 2-rung ladder with one at the top and one at the bottom of the shaft). One of the primary reasons I selected this particular piercing combination was the belief that the skin on the bottom of my penis was somehow "better" for piercing – almost as if the extra skin existed solely for that purpose. That, and my wife found the look of a PA a little bit intimidating, making the "hidden" frenum/lorem hardware a more appealing prospect in the bedroom.

Over the years, I have had a few friends and acquaintances that have been willing (or even eager) to discuss or show off their own genital piercings. Although none of them reported a difficult or unusually painful procedure, I felt compelled to research the experience thoroughly before proceeding. I found bmezine.com to be an invaluable research asset and would like to offer a special thanks to the editors and all the other posters who have taken the time to share their most intimate of moments with curious readers everywhere. Regardless of all the research on the web, I was still a nervous wreck when I arrived at the shop. Even my previous experience with several other piercings (including nipples, my personal favorite) was not enough to steel my nerves on that particular occasion. That said, my wife was steadfastly supportive of whatever decision I would make, and stood by me the whole time providing the extra little bit of courage I needed on that fateful January day. Unfortunately, the piercing professional on duty at the time seemed to have an aura of uneasiness about him. That was clearly a clue that I should go home and come back some other time, or schedule an appointment with a different artist, but by then I was hell-bent on finishing what I set out to do. I selected identical 12-gauge, 5/8" stainless steel curved barbells (not recommended, keep reading to find out why).

And so we begin with the frenum. Painful, but not exceptionally... it felt like more skin had been penetrated than I imagined would be, but no real problem at this point.

After a quick breather, we move on to the lorem – and this is where the experience turns for the worse. The lorem was outrageously painful. I yelped loud enough to startle two women waiting in the lobby, and it felt from the very start like it just wasn't quite "right". A post-procedure inspection of the piercing revealed that the placement was a little farther south than planned, but it was in and done and that was good enough for me at the time. I like to blame that decision on the mild state of shock induced by the wayward lorem. It is probably closer to the truth to say that I was just too embarrassed to scream "Dude! You f*cked up my cock!" :)

In the days immediately following the piercing, everything seemed to be progressing as expected with standard aftercare and normal healing. So let's fast forward a few months...

The curved barbells were probably a bad choice for starter hardware – they would sometimes catch, snag, or pinch my bits when wearing snug-fitting pants or jeans. Eventually, I swapped out the curved barbells for CBR hardware of the same relative size and thickness. I definitely enjoyed the added mass in my tool, and my wife enjoyed the "jingle" the rings would make as I walked around in the nude. The CBRs definitely helped relieve the pinching problem, and I recommend them over curved barbells to anyone considering a frenum or lorem. Unfortunately, at this point the hardware swap was pretty much "a day late and a dollar short" as they say. Despite much coaxing and nursing, my body finally rejected the poorly positioned and frequently irritated lorem. This was my first (and is still the only) piercing that my body has rejected, and the process is a somewhat bizarre and unsettling experience, to say the least. After removing the rejected lorem, my penis healed completely, quickly, and even left very little scarring.

As if the rejected lorem wasn't bad enough, my wife began to complain that the frenum was irritating her during intercourse. That said, I was reluctant to part with my hard earned piercing, so we had slightly awkward (sometimes condom-protected) sex until I finally decided the piercing had to go... but not until after I added a P.A. That, however, is a tale for another time :)

Moral of the story: If you don't already have a piercing professional you can count on, do your homework and don't rush into the experience without first getting some solid references for a seasoned professional. And I'm not talking just "piercing" experience, but experience with your chosen procedure is a must – don't just hand over your family jewels to an eager apprentice and expect best results.
