Self Piercing

I am not your average contributor to BME being 58 years old, married and retired. Having decided not to grow old gracefully I wanted a piercing in my penis. I would have loved to have a Prince Albert but settled for a frenum to start.

I initially had my frenum pierced at a local tattoo parlour about two years ago. He did a good job and there were no after effects or problems, although my wife was not at all pleased that I had had my penis pierced. I started with a 2.6mm piercing and quickly stretched it to 4mm then 6mm and wanted a 10mm and had already bought the jewellery for the 10mm. But it wasn't to be as the frenum broke leaving me without a real frenum.

After a while I got to wanting another piercing and thought about doing it myself. I bought two piercing needles and researched widely about self piercing. However I just couldn't pluck up the courage to go through with it and eventually I threw one of the needles into the waste bin and the other got lost in the garage.

Well last Tuesday while my wife was off visiting her sister and I was walking our collie I had this strong impluse to do the piercing, so much so that when the dog and I arrived home I went straight into the garage to find the needle.

Success, I found the needle located the dettol and tried to improvise the remaining kit. I have a collection of stainless steel jewellery from my previous piercing and intended to use a small ring from the collection for this piercing. I sterilised the needle and jewellery using neat dettol and cleaned the foreskin and my hands using dilute dettol. I was ready! Standing in the bathroom I stretched the fore skin over an eraser (rubber) and located the spot the needle was to enter. . Without forceps and with only two hands I found positioning the foreskin securely while holding the needle very difficult especially if you are nervous. I sudden realised my heart was pounding and my hands shaking. I tried to compose myself and told myself to relax that I could and wanted to do this.

After about several attempts I was satisfied that I had the foreskin stretched and secure and knew where I was going to place the piercing. I placed the needle tip against the skin and lightly and slowly pressed. Again I was aware of shaking hands and pounding heart. Gradually the needle entered the skin without pain, suddenly the needle went through with a slight feeling - I jumped and the needle came out.

Disappointed at my stupidity at withdrawing the needle before I had inserted the jewellery, I thought no problem if I use the same entry position I will do it again. Obviously by this time the foreskin had moved so that when I repeated the process I ended with a single entry hole but two exit holes and both of these in the wrong position. Reluctantly I decided not to insert any jewellery through the piercing as to my mind it and would look unsightly, I therefore determined that I would rather let it heal and then repeat the piercing process in the hope of getting the position central to the underside of the penis head just below the frenum. It bled more than I remembered my first piercing and swelled a little, this bleeding and swelling scared me a little plus the skin around the exit wound quickly became discoloured, I assumed from the bleeding under the skin. Anyway I stopped the bleeding with pressure from my fingers and sterilised the area again using dilute dettol. After that for the first 24 hours I washed the piercing with dilute salt water every four hours and then daily afterwards.

Thankfully the piercing quickly closed and healed and I was having normal pentrative sex with my wife within 36 hours of attempting the piercing.

I would say on reflection that I attempted this process on an impulse without the correct equipment. I would recommend that this process should not be hurried and that good planning is need with all the correct equipment to hand if the types or errors and difficulties I encountered are to be avoided. Having said this I consider that I learnt many lessons from the episode and for that reason alone I consider it a success plus in addition I completed the piercing and managed it's healing. Importantly I had gained the confidence to try again, as I had found that the needle does not hurt (well in the foreskin at least) and I'd overcome my fear of it .

When doing it again I would need more specialised equipment such as Tongue piercing forceps and sterile swabs. I would also consider sitting or lying on the bed rather than standing to give more stability. I still want a piercing so I just need to decide when to try again and assemble the equipment. I won't leave it another two years.
