I've been thinking about getting some sort of adornment for my penis for the last few months, so I started looking into getting a cock ring but then figured that a piercing would be a much better decoration, if you're going to do something do it properly right? So I started reading some experiences on BMEzine (I did this before I got my nape pierced too and it was extremely helpful so this article is my way of saying thank you to all you guys and girls) to see what was around and two piercings in particular caught my eye, a PA and a frenum. I decided, as many others have, that a frenum would be a gentle introduction to genital piercing so that would be the first one on the list. I also decided that I wanted to do it myself, initially it was because I was loath to pay someone 50 quid to do it for me (what can I say, I'm a poor student!) however, that idea developed and I realised that this piercing would mean so much more to me if I did it myself, if I can stick a needle through my own penis surely I can do anything I set my mind to.

Well, that and I didn't want to be out of action, so to speak, with my girlfriend during the final few months before I left her for 6 months! Having now settled in LA I got a spur of the moment urge to do it about 5 days ago, so I "borrowed" the largest gauge sealed sterile needle I could find from the lab I work in with the intention of piercing myself that evening. I wanted the piercing to be 2.4mm (10 gauge) initially and then over time work up from there, however the needle I managed to get was only 1.2mm (18 gauge). I figured that with the load of spare jewelry and tapers of various sizes I have from various other piercings I could make it happen.
So after work I went home to find the apartment empty, great, no flat mates to create unwanted interruptions and so set about boiling the jewelry and tapers to clean them while I went and showered. With everything set to go I went about cleaning and marking where I want the piercing to be, double check its right, unwrap and unsheathe the needle and with a small amount of apprehension gently pushed it through my frenum. The needle went through easily enough, I could feel as it broke the skin on the way in and then again on the way out. Surprisingly, pain isn't a word I'd use to describe the piercing, a small amount of discomfort yes, but pain no. No blood either which kind of surprised me, I'd prepared for the worst and had a mini first aid kit at hand which fortunately wasn't needed at all. Now, I'd assumed that with a little encouragement and a little lubrication a 1.6mm (16 gauge) ring would go through a 1.2mm (18 gauge) hole with relative ease, evidently not in this case. I think it's because the skin w as loose that I couldn't get the pressure continually in the direction of the hole to ease it though. So after 15 minutes of trying I decide it's futile and that I should have done it properly in the first place. I tidied up and went about finding a website that supplies 10 gauge needles which I then ordered straight away.
Yesterday, a needle, needle holder, some clamping tweezers and a 2.4mm (10 gauge) internally threaded barbell arrive and deciding there's no time like the present I set about showering and prepping stuff again. So once again I'm sat naked in my chair with various piercing bits in front of me and go about cleaning and marking the area again, with that done I set about trying to clamp the tweezers in the right place on my frenum, easier said than done when you're not circumsised. Eventually I get there and with my frenum clamped I unwrapped the needle and put it in its holder, as with the previous needle, the 2.4mm (10 gauge) one slipped though pretty easily with once again just a little discomfort and no blood. I go to put the barbell though and can get it into the entry hole but not out the exit hole, very frustrating. No matter how hard I pushed it wouldn't go though, was getting caught up on the skin inside so after several attempts I settle on slipping in a 1.6mm (16 gauge) BCR, this slips in no problem at all. On taking the tweezers off there was a very small amount of blood, about a milliliter at most, really nothing worth worrying about and was easily wiped away with a cotton bud and some Savlon spray. Once the jewelry was in there was no discomfort at all, in fact quite the opposite, with my foreskin rolled back when I move the ring swings a little and feels pretty good!
I'm typing this the day after having walked to and from work and walked around all day at work with no problems whatsoever, no pain, no discomfort, no swelling/bruising, nothing. It feels as if it's a healed piercing, knocking/touching it isn't uncomfortable at all, obviously it's not healed and it won't be treated as such but it does feel like it!
Despite being 2 gauges smaller than I wanted to be I'm still extremely happy with this piercing, it's mine, done by me with no third party involved and plenty of time ahead of me to go about getting to larger sizes. So the big question now is when can I fit in getting that PA done?!
Just to keep the lawyers off of mine and BMEzine's backs: You all know the score, self piercing isn't recommended unless you know what you're doing, use your common sense, if you're unsure in any way shape or form don't do it.
