I hadn't every considered getting a piercing done, as there are very few that I actually think look good. However, after meeting up with a friend and his fiancee at a NIN concert and hanging out w/ them for a weekend, I started to get a faint curiosity about the whole piercing experience.

So the next day I went with them to a shop in Ann Arbor, MI to watch his fiancee get her septum done. They jokingly asked me what piercing I was going to get and I played along and said I'd consider one. Well, after looking through the books I thought the frenum looked pretty damn cool, especially with a ring that went around the base of the glans (sorry, my piercing nomenclature is weak), and I knew that I wanted a piercing that wasn't visible for professional reasons. As I watched the actualy piercing being done, I was pretty impressed by the professionalism of the procedure, even though my friend's fiancee appeared to flinch quite a bit as the needle went through. It turns out that the piercer had come from a studio in East Lansing, where I go to school. Needless to say, I was becoming more and more curious.

After several drinks that evening, and a considerable amount of time poking myself in the genitals (alcohol makes you do strange things), I decided that a frenum or hafada piercing wouldn't hurt at all and would be cool to have. When I got back to East Lansing I called up the local studio that was recommended (Kevin at Splash of Color) and set up a consultation appointment.

Oddly, I didn't feel very much trepidation or have any cold feet symptoms as the day approached, probably because I just assumed I would go in for a consultation and not actually go through w/ the piercing. Ha Ha. So anyway, I went to the studio and waited around for Kevin to finish up. There were 3 or 4 college girls hanging out in the lobby, presumably waiting to get assorted parts pierced. One of them asked me if I was getting a tattoo and I said that I was getting a piercing. Naturally she asked where. I debated lying but figured what the hell, I'll tell her. She (and the other girls) seemed extremely surprised. One specific question was "Wouldn't that hurt?" .....Duh?

So, it came my turn to meet w/ Kevin. I made sure to ask him every single question I could remember about the piercing and specifically the aftercare, etc. He answered all the questions adequately and finally I ran out of questions. I sat there for a moment looking stupid while I tried to think of more questions. Finally, partly cause I thought I'd see how ballsy (no pun intended) I really am, and partly cause I didn't want to look like a moron for asking him all these questions and then deciding I didn't want it, I said "let's do it."

Kevin set all the stuff up and I stripped from the waist down and laid on the table. It was suprising how relaxed I was considering a) a strange male was about to touch my penis and b) said strange male was about to put a new hole in my penis. But I waited for Kevin to set stuff up. He marked the spot, told me about the sterilization procedures, and finally got out the clamp. About this time I laid back and stared straight at the ceiling, covered my eyes, and just concentrated on breathing. I felt some tugging and the poking of what felt like a needle going through my skin. About this time Kevin said "You're doing good, just keep breathing." This, plus the pricking poking feeling led me to believe he was doing it. I marveled at how little pain there was...

Big mistake.

A couple seconds after I relaxed, Kevin actually _did_ the piercing. Needless to say, the fact that I thought he had already pierced me, and that I had never had a piercing before, resulted in -far- more pain than I had expected. Especially since I heard the frenum wasn't very painful. Regardless, I couldn't help but yell in pain and surprise. It hurt like hell.

Almost immediately after he put the jewelry in (which wasn't very comfortable in its own right), I started laughing hysterically, partly because I couldn't believe I had actually done it, and partly because it looked so damn cool. I got pierced w/ a 10g barbell.

It is now 3 weeks later and my piercing is pretty much healed. I don't get crusties anymore, it hasn't bled in a long long time, and more importantly, it didn't hurt unless I managed to tweak it by accident (a rare occurance).

The best part is that more girls have wanted to see my penis in the last 3 weeks than did in my entire 21 years before the piercing. I love this piercing, and would recommend it to anyone who can find a solid and reputable piercer in their area.
