Trans-scrotal experience.

At the time I had been a guinea pig for a well respected professional piercing studio in Perth Western Australia where I was fitted with a good number of piercing, beads, and other operations. In the early months of the year 2000 I was asked if I would be game to try a Trans-scrotal piercing. I was informed that the piercer had completed their research and was ready to go and perform this, was I ready to receive it. After due thinking I said yes, but where was it to go through. The obvious answer is through the scrotum, but I have tattoos on both the front and back of my scrotum that I did not want the piercing to pass through.

Discussion ensued and it was agreed that there was enough space between my body and the tattoos front and back to pass the piercing though. I was also asked to wear ball weights, (scrotum stretching weight), over night for the seven days prior to the piercing to stretch the scrotum skin and help make a bit more space for the piercing.

On the day of the piercing, everything went to plan. I arrived at the studio, and

applied EMLA to the front and back of my scrotum. This was covered and left for an hour. During this time the needle was sharpened, then I cleaned it with an alcohol wipe and placed it into an autoclave bag. I then did the same with the barbell and balls. I then placed them into the autoclave and set the cycle running

After the hour I had a hot shower to make the skin of my scrotum soft and stretchy. A small torch was used to verify that the piercing would not pass thought any veins or any thing other than skin. The entry and exit point were marked and we all agreed on the placement. Using both hands of an assistant and one hand of the piercer my scrotum skin was clamped with the entry and exit points aligned and nothing between then except for skin. The 2.4mm solid needle with the barbell screwed to the end was pushed through my skin from back to front. The needle was unscrewed from the barbell and the second ball screwed onto the front. Over the next five or so minutes the skin at the front of my scrotum slid along the bar to the point where both balls where touching my skin. A sigh of quiet achievement was felt by all, myself included.

I put my clothes on and joined the others to reflect upon what we had just done.

The healing: There was mild discomfort with walking and sitting, but it is a very protected location so it did not get knocked so it was not too bad to live with. The problems started about two weeks into the healing. The bar was too short, we originally measured it at 45mm long and made the bar this length but the 8mm balls were being pulled into the skin to there full size at both the front and the rear. The skin was very red and sore. A longer 60mm bar was made and by screwing the longer bar onto the short bar the bars were changed over. The new long bar being autoclaved before use of course. This extra length was much more comfortable and the barbell balls were not being embedded into my skin. The redness and soreness started to ease. I was still getting a good amount of discharge from both ends of the piercing and I knew I was in trouble as the lymph nodes in my groin were sore and expanding.

A trip to a piercing friendly doctor resulted in a course of anti-biotics for the infection. The anti-biotics did the trick and cleared up the infection, my lymph nodes returned to normal size and the skin that was sore and red where the balls were being pulled into it was healing. To help the healing process along I also used a prescribed ointment called Kenacomb, this is a steroid based anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic. The only bad side-effect of using this ointment is the skin it was being applied to was drying out. I then switched to using Bepanthen cream, commonly used to help heal tattoos. The creams main use is for baby care, nappy rash, sunburn, etc. Using this cream continued the good work that the Kenacomb started and helped with the drying of the skin.

During this healing time I could feel new skin being formed along the outside of the barbell closing off the space between the front and the back holes in the skin. The front and back eventually closed together in about six to eight months and the channel formed about 45mm long.

For comfort I changed the front and back balls on the barbell to 8mm spaceships, the balls with a row of smaller balls around the outside of them to form a circle. These with their bigger diameter against the skin have been extremely comfortable and now at the end of 15 months of healing I an barely aware that the long 60mm bar is there. I still get a small amount of discharge from the piercing but it is about the same as what you would get from a nipple piercing if it was nearly 45mm long.

The piercing was not an easy piercing to heal and caused me pain and discomfort that my life could have done without, but now that it is healed I would class it as one of the easiest to live with, clean, and ignore.
