I strongly discourage underage, self-piercers especially with penile piercings. The anticipation and wait will only further your satisfaction with a new piercing and self-piercing can result in permanent damage and/or large blood loss. Why dick with what defines you as a man just because of impatience?

In addition to getting my ampallang, I was going to get my nipples redone (both have two piercings) after a botched healing process. I went to my professional piercer and he suggested I do them all at once. So the endorphins from the nipples might have contributed to how I considered the pain of the ampallang piercing.
The nipples were a little tough because of the scar tissue built up. It reminds me of how important it is to keep good piercing hygiene if you are planning on keeping it for an extended period of time. So after two nipple piercings, he prepared for the ampallang.
For those of you preparing for the piercing, it is basic setup. Sit down on a reclined chair, legs apart with with penis hanging out, and the piercer should do most of the work from there. As with preference of my piercer, he placed the exit dots with a marker and placed a clamp around the head of my penis. As with my preference, and what I suggest to new piercees, take a deep breath and exhale "One . . .", deep breath and exhale "Two . . .", and the third deep breath and have the needle go through when you exhale "Three." My procedure was relatively painless and quick. I often feel the stinging of the lubricant more than the needle. You will undoubtedly, as I did, feel the needle go through your urethra, which is a sharp, brief pain. The jewelry should be oversized to compensate for the size of your erection, do not get a snug fit until it has healed. Also, wear underwear that will catch the blood, because in my case there was about a teaspoon. A good piercer will do it in less than second. You will feel the weight of the jewelry when you stand up.
The healing isn't bad, the first couple days I suggest wrapping it saline gauze. I use a salt water solution for all piercings, H2Ocean is good if you do not have a home brew. I generally use a teaspoon of natural sea salt for every eight ounces of distilled water (I warn against using tap water, more than enough bacteria, ions, and metal complexes to cause infection and/or irritation). Also, I use regular soap while in the shower to wash the piercing. Urine does not affect the piercing (and is actually one of the most sterile bodily fluids, due to the nature of kidneys). It did not sting when I urinated, although I had been told that it might. My stream broke, so unless you have good aim, so go for urinals unless you want to give someone a mess to clean up. The first couple of days there was a small amount of blood. After the first three months, you should be able to switch the jewelry.
I often get questions about what it is like with erections. It wasn't painful the first couple days as much as it was uncomfortable. Erections after the first week were normal, no excessive bleeding or pain, and you learn to work with what you now have.
The reason I gauged up was because I went to a different store and they gave me the incorrect jewelry (a new guy who assured me that it was also 12, but was 10). The original jewelry (1 1/2 in.) had external threads (meaning the screw threads are on the bar) and the new jewelry (1 1/8 in.) had internal threads (meaning the threads are on the sphere) and so I linked them by screwing the original jewelry into the new jewelry. How I handled the gauging up was by sitting in a hot bath and slowly pushing the new bar through the hole while pulling out the original bar. DO NOT EXPECT IT TO GO SMOOTHLY. As with others who discussed their gauges, mine was the same, a difficult and slow process that requires patience. I did not use lubrication, as with my preference but I suggest it if it does not bother you. The most painful part of gauging is going through the urethra membrane, which will get even the most callus piercer wince. But remember, go slow, have patience, and apply enough pressure until you cannot take the pain and keep that pressure constant.
If you are debating whether or not to get the ampallang, go for it! Women love it, looks bad ass, and it isn't that painful. I highly recommend it. So on the scale of one to ten, ear lobes a 1, nipples a 3, original ampallang is 2.5, a gauged ampallang 3, and scar tissue nipples a 6.
