Well, it was about a year ago, when I had been into piercing for about a year. I thought that it would be cool to do an Ampallang. So I planned for about a month on how the process was going to go down. So, on an early spring Friday afternoon, I checked the mail, looking for the 14g piercing needles that I had ordered off of eBay. To my great surprise, they had come, my having only ordered them about a week earlier, and knowing how long orders can take to arrive.

So, the following night, I took my now complete piercing kit up to my room of my then new apartment, and took it to my tile floor living room. I locked all of the doors, and braced myself. I took off all of the clothes below my waist and found the alcohol. I took my gas sterilized forceps out of the package, along with the needle and placed them on a stainless steel tray a nurse friend of mine got for me. I took the SkinSafe felt tip pen that I ordered off of a piercing website and, after careful lining up with a ruler and a level, made two dots. I then alcoholed (is that a word?) the organ and applied the clamps. I prayed to God that this wasn't going to hurt, and then grabbed the 14g needle. (I neglected to mention before, that before the tools were taken out of the sterile pouches, I washed my hands with a sodium hydroxide solution, [medical grade soap] and then applied sterile latex hospital gloves.) I then lined the needle up with the holes and then squeezed the clamps REALLY tight, and inserted the needle. I felt more of the crushing pain of the clamps rather than the stabbing of the needle. Come to think of it, the pain from the initial piercing was really NOT that severe. I looked at the other side (I had gone in from the right, and came out on the left) and I sighed in relief. I had hit the dot on the other side PERFECTLY. I looked at my new piercing with the needle through it once more before I applied the cork to the other end of the needle. I then took the standard 14g tongue barbell out of the sterile pouch and unscrewed one of the balls. I put the threaded end inside of the end of the hollow needle and pulled the needle through. This was virtually painless, and there was not a single drop of blood. I then screwed the other ball onto the end of the bar and thought, "Damn, I just impaled my penis". It looked good, so I applied, with a cotton swab, a benzalkonium ointment that a piercer friend of mind hooked me up with. Afterwards, my girlfriend came over, and almost fainted when I showed her what I had just done to myself.

Aftercare was easy enough, applying the b. chloride four times per day, and sea salt soaks in the morning and at night. The throbbing, swelling, and otherwise initial healing was finished in about a week and a half, and all went uphill from there. I kept applying the ointment, having once or twice to substitute Bacitracin for the actual stuff, and I was able to safely touch it without pain after three weeks. After three weeks, I took it out once per day, and cleaned the barbell and the piercing itself with Dial soap in the shower, and all seemed to be alright. Piercing was completely healed in one month and one week. I did, however abstain from sexual INTERCOURSE for the recommended three months. (The hardest 90 days of my life!)

Here I stand, a year later, ampallang and all, infection free, pain free, and with a VERY happy girlfriend. I feel that this is an excellent piercing to get, and even though I did it myself, was a very easy piercing to execute. Having studied art and math in school, I was able to line the dots and the piercing needle up perfectly, and come out with a by-the-book ampallang. Guys, if you are scared of the pain, let me tell you, it's a quick pinch, and then it's over.

As for doing it myself, I believe that it's best to leave it to professionals if you are unsure of any aspect of the piercing. I, myself, was aware of the risks of bleeding, nerve damage, infection, sexual side effects, and asymmetry. I have taken classes and have extensive knowledge of the human anatomy, and know where all the major veins and arteries are, and therefore had no qualms about the damage, and have to say, everything went exactly as planned in this procedure.

Guys, do it for your girls, girls, be there for your guys. This is a massive step, and could alter a relationship in an extreme way. But if you want it bad enough, definitely go for it. The pain is definitely worth the outcome!
