I'm really prompted to write of my own experience primarily to clear up some misconceptions that apparently even experienced piercing affectionados seem to promulgate, if the numerous tell-all web blogs are any indication. While I'm a first time "piercee", I can write with some assurance, here, because I ,too, allowed my inaccurate knowledge to deter me from getting my ampallang at a far earlier age. I had thought about getting such a piercing in my teens, long before the piercing/tattoo craze of the 90's became a culturally acceptable phenomenon. When the question wasn't just "IF" or "WHEN" I would acquire such a body modification, but "HOW".

Fortunately, GenX-ers opened up the eyes of our sleepy society, and now finding qualified and reputable artists is a phone book or web search away! However, old misconceptions apparently die hard! I want my message to be understood and so I wish to state my motive,outright.....GET PIERCED!!!!! That is, don't let misinformation keep you from getting the body modifications of your dreams-BUT DO IT SAFELY!!

It might seem like a rather radical initial introduction to piercing to start off with a genital modification, particularly an ampallang. Numerous tales expound the horrors of the procedure- the intense pain, the blood,etc.- ALL are unnecessary events carried out on clients by inexperienced piercers!!! The simple truth of the matter is, that a qualified piercer should be able to do this procedure quickly, efficiently, and with surprisingly minimal pain to the client! Of course everyone's pain threshold is different, but I feel confident I'm no more brazen then the next fella- what I did have, was a very experienced piercing artist performing my procedure! To my own astonishment, my piercer, Brian, told me in advance not just what he would soon be doing to me, but how it would likely "feel" as he was doing it! Furthermore, that the procedure would be accomplished in under a second....UNDER A SECOND! He was absolutely accurate on all counts!!! No tugging and pushing, no excruciating pain, no protracted efforts, and copious bleeding only within the initial few minutes after the procedure. What I DID receive was a low-key, subdued environment, a calm, confident and low-key piercer, a thorough consult prior to and after the procedure (touching on medical matters and after-care hygienics, as well as a two-week check-up appointment); a sterile protocol fiercely maintained throughout the entire procedure; and lastly only a medically certified metal alloy employed in the jewelry provided.

The outcome...an absolutely calm, almost Zen-like experience with not a single instance of discomfort, and no problems during the few months of healing! The result is a piercing that not only looks good and feels good, but one that brings with it an unexpected sense of "tranquility" and "completeness" (... this from an individual whom is admittedly rather non-spiritual by nature-go figure!). I'm not saying the procedure is pain free, only that it is far from "excruciating"....there's a lot of things that hurt alot worst! In any event the procedure is over so quickly, one almost doesn't have time to experience what discomfort there is, before it is over!!! In my own case, the expected electric-like shock of a sharp needle penetrating my sensitive glans was in fact perceived as nothing greater then a momentary concentration of pressure, that dissipated well before it really built up to a level that might have been painful. I've had injections at the doctor's office that hurt a heck of alot worst!

Another problem I've read alot about with ampallang piercings, is difficulties with jewelry size. This, too, is usually another instance of a client getting fitted by a less than qualified piercer. A problem that need not and should not happen. The male glans swells during erection, and the piercer should fit his client with a size bar that will accept this increase at the time of the procedure. A close approximation of this swelling is initially measured in advance by the piercer squeezing the head of the penis-simple and straight forward. Also it is recommended to start with a smaller gauge bar and move up in size gradually as the glans heals. New skin is thin and sensitive in the early stages of healing and needs time to thicken. A good ampallang piercing should heal within three to five months. I've had mine, now nearly six months, but it was basically healed by three months. One should keep the newly pierced ampallang clean and dry (using ONLY distilled water as necessary--and NO ointments at all) for the duration of this healing time. Also, since new skin growth is delicate and fragile, it is NOT necessary or advised to twist and tug on the jewelry. Rather the jewelry should be kept immobile as far as possible- time enough later to play with your new "ornamentations"!

The bottom line is, NO piercing should ever be "excruciating", however much it might make good copy to report otherwise, or awe your uninitiated friends with your prowess and fortitude! Painful procedures are the earmarks of less than qualified artists! So if you

have ever dreamed of getting that special piercing.....DO SO!!!! Leave the horror stories to

TV. Have fun, but proceed with adequate information and safety!
