Today was the day.

Mentally I've been gearing up for an ampallang for a couple of years now having first seen one quite a while back and thinking it looked the best type of piercing that a guy can have.

I tried to get it done back in January at a local piercing studio called Skin Tone and was all ready to go in when it became clear during a phone conversation that the guy I was speaking to thought than an ampallang was a vertical piercing. Considering that this was his profession (or maybe he was the tattooist instead), I decided that this did not exactly inspire confidence and sought to find somewhere else.

The search led me to White Flame piercing studio near my home in Bournemouth of which I was vaguely aware. Having checked out the website, it looked like a decent place, even if they did charge £70 for the privilege!

A couple of weeks ago I phoned to ask how to go about it and was told that I'd need to decide where I wanted it exactly, measure myself and then get back to them with the required bar length. So, out came the ruler and with full erection achieved I measured up at 40mm for one that would go just through the top of the urethra. For some reason, they don't do the measuring but leave it all down to you – I get the impression that this is a bit unusual judging by what I've read elsewhere.

Sarge, the guy at White Flame, got back to me last week to say that the jewellery was in so I booked up an appointment for today at 6pm after I had finished work. Last week, I remember lying in bed thinking that May 8, 2001 was going to be the day I got a 40mm bar of metal through my dick! (I have got a frenum and PA piercing too but did both of these rather amateurishly myself and don't really count them as 'proper' piercings for that reason).

Anyway, today arrived and I wasn't really getting that nervous. It was only from about 4pm onwards as my day in the office drew to a close that I experienced a slight flutter of anticipation. I got home for 5.30pm and thankfully my housemate wasn't in which meant I could peacefully get down to marking a couple of dots as to where I wanted the holes. I hadn't asked about this but had assumed I might need to do it seeing as I'd had to do the measuring too.

Starting to get nervous now, I walked the ten minutes or so down the road, stopping to withdraw cash on the way. I walked in to the studio more or less on the dot of 6pm and asked for Sarge, to be informed that it was he that I was speaking to and that he was half wondering if I was not going to show. He got the forms to sign and there were a few of his colleagues hanging around and I sort of sensed they knew what I was there for but what the hell, too late to get embarrassed and pull out now!

Sarge guided me to a room at the back, past the tattooing room and told me to get up on the reclined bed/chair thing. He applied plenty of anaesthetic to my rather shrivelled manhood (he must have been wondering where I got that 40mm figure from!) and was pleased to see that I'd marked it all up for him. He then put on a small plastic bag cover over my dick head and we waited and chatted for 10 minutes while the anaesthetic took effect.

After all the stuff had been sterilised, he asked if I was ready and I said as ready as I'll ever be! On went the clamp, perfectly placed over the holes. I looked up at the ceiling and kept looking. He started, and over the next five seconds or so, asked me three times if I was alright. I said yes each time and was genuinely surprised to hear him say it was through so quickly. All I had felt was a small pin-prick or something like a bee sting. So, that was all fine and then I said I'd heard that the insertion of the jewellery was generally more painful. He didn't reply, which I interpreted as being bad news! As a result, I looked skywards again. On the ceiling was a poster saying "the pain is short but the ornament is long" and by the time I looked back he was looking me in the eye, smiling and saying "and there you have your ampallang!"

I could hardly believe it. The 40mm bar looked so long in my floppy penis (at least twice as long as it need be in that state!) and the whole thing had happened so quickly and relatively painlessly. I did a lot of wondering about how realistic all these claims were that it hurt like hell but I must say to anyone thinking of getting it done that it's not that bad at all. Piercing various parts of my scrotum a few years ago was a lot more painful without a doubt!

I thanked Sarge, shook his hand and he generously gave me a free can of saline solution. He's keen for me to keep in touch to inform him of the progress so I will, and may just get a smaller length bar too!

On the way out, his female colleague asked me if it was OK and I said it was fine, still in a slight daze about how it had all happened. She said her boyfriend was a trainee piercer and was considering getting an ampallang so I said – with the assured knowledge of a man who's had an ampallang for all of five minutes! – that he should definitely go for it. I bet she'd love it too!

Sarge said I'd be 'out of action' for about a month which is no problem as I haven't had sex for quite a while unfortunately. Hopefully that will change soon though and I can give some ladies the benefit of my new plaything!!

This is three hours later now and there's a bit of a numb pain but nothing too bad. I've managed to urinate a few times without too much problem either.

So, in summary, to any of you guys out there reading this, let this be an inspiration for you to go for it and not feel fear. Forget these horror stories that you read in some places and go to a good reputable studio with the right friendly atmosphere then when it's all over, stare down at those balls on either side of your dick and keep smiling wide about what you've just done!
