I got my nipples pierced at PSU when I was a freshman at Art of the Ages in State College, Pa. I believe the piercer there is named Phil. I had gone there previously and had my tongue pierced. I returned since I was very happy with Phil's work and I was comfortable with him. If anyone is in the State College area I would highly recommend Phil. I have since recommended him to a few of my friends and everyone has been happy with his work. I wasn't sure what I was going to get done but they had a 2 piercings for the price of 1 special, but it had to be the same body part. Eyebrows were out since I wanted something I could hide (as at that point I was self conscious about visable piercings) so I went with nipples. It cost $45 for both plus I left a $10 tip as it was a great deal and Phil was awesome. I first saw a nipple piercing on a kid that I lifeguarded with but he only had one side done. I figured if I was going to do it I would get both. Probably because I have an OCD type thing where I need to be symmetrical. Like any piercing I have has to be in the center, or if it is on one side then the other side has to be the same way as well. I am no longer self conscious about any of my piercings. My best friend just had me show his wife my ampallang.

Phil started off by cleaning and marking the area and asked me if I liked the placement. He put on new gloves before he did all of this and all the instruments were clean. He then picked out the jewelry for it. He went with circular rings with a slightly larger diameter then most you see. He did this as he felt a ring is better for a new piercing with the cleaning and he went for the larger diameter since that would mean less of a curve going through my nipple and he wanted it to heal as straight as possible and not get pulled down on the sides. This all made sence.

After he explained why the jewelry was larger then what I was thinking of he then had me take deep breaths and on the 3rd breath the needle went through. Then the same happened for the right. It really didn't hurt but I have a pretty good pain tolerance. I guess having had cancer has prepared me for piercings.

He then gave me an aftercare sheet. I forget what he told me to use as it was a while ago and most piercers say different things then others. My way of healing it involves keeping my hands off any piercing unless I am in the shower or have just washed them, and swimming a few times a week in a chlorinated pool. This is easy as I am a lifeguard and swim all the time.

It is 4 years later and I still have them in. I am in a very conservative med school now but I can hide them most of the time. I guess my parents noticed first and freaked out and yelled a lot about why would I do this to myself. I just said because I think it looks good. My sisters then found out and they each got their nipples pierced. The people in med school who have seen them think I am a little weird and we may joke around about it but that is just people joking around and all my friends are ok with it although I am truly not sure if what friends of mine really like it but I do and that is what matters.

If anyone is thinking about getting it done I say go for it; it doesn't hurt really at all and it heals ok and it looks good.

I do want to say one last thing before I go. I have herd some stories on line about airports and metal detectors and piercings. I just recently got back to the US from flying to Australia, and before I was flying from the US to Ireland and then Ireland to many other places in Europe and I have never had a problem with a metal detector and all piercings (ears, tongue, nipples, navel, septum, ampallang, and labret) have the standard surgical steel jewelry in them that they were pierced with. So if I had no problem with airport security you all shouldn't either.

I have run out of things that I can hide with being in medical school as I had this great idea of rewarding myself I did well on a hard test or unit with a piercing. I did say if I passed the year I would get a backpeace as my reward. Well I passed the year and the back peace is designed and I just need to get it done. I am a little nervous. Not about the pain but about a tattoo being permanent and all my piercings can be taken out and all. But the design I have made is something that means something to me know and will forever and it looks good in the process.
