Actually this is my second time getting my nipples pierced. The first experience I had was not that bad really. I wanted to get my nipples pierced, but never researched what exactly I wanted. I went to my local tattoo shop where I get all of my ink from, and walked out with a pair of nipple piercings. They were great at first. A standard set of rings, and I followed all precautions. I never did get any infections, but the rings were getting caught on EVERYTHING, shirts, towels, etc. So after 3 months, I took them out. If you are looking to get your nipples pierced, research what you want.

About a month or so ago, I decided I really wanted them back. So again, I went to my local tattoo shop, now under a different name, Devotion Tattoo. This time there was a new piercer, Delaney, as my old piercer moved across country. I was a bit nervous since I had just met him when the new shop opened. He seemed nice enough, so I felt a little more at ease. He listened as I told him my previous experience. He told me he only pierced with straight barbells for those reasons. After seeing pictures on this site, I knew that is what I wanted, not only to keep them from getting caught on everything, but I was into the way they looked. He even went on to tell me he only uses titanium grade, internally threaded jewelry and explained why. Immediately, I said lets do it.
Delaney really made the experience great. He explained everything that was going to happen, even though I had been through it before. He took his time lining up the markings on my nipples to make sure they were perfect, all the while talking to my husband and me to put us at ease. After a few minutes I completely felt better about standing in front of my husband and a complete stranger exposed from the waist up.
After the markings were complete, he asked me to lie on what I call a table, really just a piercing bench, and explained step by step what he was going to do. First I would have the forceps applied, and then I would feel the pinch of the needle, then the deep breath in, and out, and in the needle went. Just thinking about the needle now makes my skin crawl, but there really wasn't much pain. I would be lying if I said it didn't hurt, but only for an instant. The adrenaline of getting pierced again completely overrode my pain receptors. The other nipple was done in just a few seconds and the procedure was over. He asked me to take a look in the mirror and they looked great.
Afterwards, Delaney went through how to care for the piercings, and also told me to come and see him with any problems or questions. Overall, the experience was awesome. I couldn't even tell the next day that I was pierced, unless of course I leaned against something, or hugged someone. I've had minimal bleeding, or discharge. Overall cleaning is just soaking them twice a day with a mixture of sea salt and distilled water. I love the way they look and so does my husband!
It's really up to the person what type of jewelry they prefer, but I recommend getting the barbells first. After they heal, you can always change them out. You don't have to worry about getting snagged on anything, or the pressure of the ring being pressed down inside your bra. The only thing with barbells is to make sure the beads are tightly screwed on. Delaney even checked them before I left the shop.
Even now, a few days later, they feel great. At times when I'm outside in the cold (its December) it's not the most comfortable feeling in the world, but as soon as I get inside the irritation goes away. I can lie on my side while sleeping, but I haven't ventured to sleep on my stomach yet. I've been able to sleep without a bra on, but I'm more comfortable walking around the house with one on so they are a bit more protected. Maybe I'm just being a baby about it, but I know how it feels to get hooked on something and have the piercing start bleeding, let alone the pain. As far as getting anything else pierced, I'm quite sure I'm finished. I enjoy getting tattooed much more.
If you are looking to get your nipples pierced, I highly recommend it. The first time it completely heightened my sensitivity. Within minutes I felt more than I ever had. Possibly because there was needle through my nipple, but it was welcomed. This time I'm not sure if they feel any different, but just the way they look is enough pay off for me!
