About a month into school we came to a consensus; because we were still 3 years underage (we were both 13, the legal age here is 16), we were going to take matters into our own hands. About a week later and after a few very, very undedicated attempts on my part (these consisted of pushing a safety pin til it broke the skin and then giving up), she came to school with a very badly done nipple piercing (a valiant attempt, but a valiant attempt isn't quite good enough in a piercing is it?)( it wasn't all the way through either, it had a regular earring in through most of the way but nothing to hold it is place), and then I had no choice.
Now this was that special time when at least seventy five percent of the girls in or around my grade had attempted at least one do it yourself piercing, and many succeeded, only to have their parents tell them to take it out, and serves them right, it's not like their parents couldn't see the piece of metal sticking out of their faces, really, as if any parent that has eyes - or at some point in their life had eyes - wouldn't notice that their child has an earring in their lip (yes, an earring, usually that was the only jewelry that could easily go through as both jewelry and piercing tool in one *cringe*). So anyways, I knew that when the girl in my French class came to school with hers done, it was my turn.
I took the rest of the day at school to learn all that I could from the girls who'd done their own successful DIY piercings. I realized that they were all idiots and I definately did not plan on putting one of those tiny ear-gun earrings through my nipple after removing the dirty safety pin.
And then came the moment of truth. That night, I took a brand new, never used safety pin from a package (I know, I know, not the greatest tool available) and let it soak it in a cup of alcohol. I even had the idea to spray a little bit of Bactine on my right nipple. Then, I was ready.
*Again, do not try this at home*
I sat at my desk under a bright study light and under some not so safe cleanliness conditions and began to push in the safety pin. It was a lot tougher than I'd imagined it would be. After about five minutes I was past the first few layers on skin. I never realized how hard it would be to actually get the pin through, I was pretty much giving it my all. It didn't so much hurt as it was hot, even to touch with my fingers, my nipple was hot! I pressed on, painstakingly breaking each layer of skin. I was about halfway through when the unthinkable happened: my mother knocked on the door.
I grabbed a book and pulled down my shirt and pretended to be reading, all she had to say was that she'd made muffins. Great, I hate her muffins.
Anyways, I pulled my shirt back up and was happy to find that the safety pin was exactly where I'd left it. I pressed on, slowly making my progress through my nipple. Finally, there was only a small bit of skin left. I continued pushing as I had and realized I was getting nowhere! I had to put my finger on the other side of the skin as I pushed and had to ignore the sweat building on my face from the pain. This was the only part of the piercing process that actually hurt, but it made up for everything that didn't (actually, pushing the pin hurt my fingers as much as the last part hurt my nipple).
When I finally had it through a closed the safety pin and went to bed. Sleeping was an interesting event, I was in a very, very uncomfortable position.
Three days after the piercing I went into Claire's and purchased a straight barbell with blue beach balls on either of the ends, I liked it then, although not so much anymore, at least for my nipple, but no matter. It went through with a small amount of pus, but otherwise easily. It was finished.
Eventually I bought a silver barbell that had smaller balls on it and I still wear it today. The piercing never sustained an infection, luckily, and I still like it. It turned out great, but it might not turn out so great for you.
