I had decided to try out my new invincibility, and prove to myself how mature I was by getting one of my nipples pierced. I had initially wanted my septum done, however on the day I went into town with the money to try and convince someone to do it (on the phone, the piercers were very hesitant to commit, and seemed unsure about what a septum was. Not promising...) unsuccessfully, I learned of a shop opening that had an experienced piercer from a recently closed shop coming in to teach a trainee and who would be willing to pierce my septum. Elated I decided that what I'd been planning as my next piercing, my nipple, would be today. I ditched my friends who went to the movies, and made the jaunt over to the dodgy looking Tattoo place.

Location Bunbury, Western Australia I knew they did piercings from friends, but didn't advertise it strangely enough. I was met by a middle aged looking lady, who didn't question my age and told me she'd be out in 15 minutes. The only jewellery I could see was in a minuscule cabinet behind the counter, not really inviting browsing. I sat down, excited about what was to come. It was sort of for my boyfriend (now ex) but mostly for me, so I could be different. She came out in what seemed like no time, and invited me into a large white room, rather sparse and oddly arranged with what looked like a dentist's chair in one corner and medical cabinets in the opposite corner. I pulled my shirt and bra down, after asking if I could lie down and she said that it would affect how straight it was. She rubbed a cotton bud dipped in something cold around my nipple, making it hard. I vaguely remember her making the marks on the sides, without consulting me the size of the jewellery I wanted or if I liked the placement.
She didn't really talk much at all, I think just trying to get me in and out as soon as possible. She clamped it, and I leant back a bit closing my eyes breathing in as she pushed the needle through. It didn't really hurt that much for me, just pressure on the underside. After putting in a plain bar she got a cup or warm water and ran it over it, catching the drips at the bottom with a cotton bud. She just told me to do this with warm water to soothe it, and told me to buy some Earcare antiseptic to clean it with twice daily. For the rest of the day I didn't really notice it, as she'd taped a cotton pad over it to protect it I guess. I went and bought a loose singlet with support to prevent the hassle of it getting caught on bras, and had very little trouble with it while it was healing.
I've had it for a few months now, and I still get crusties occasionally, which were initially from a too short bar that I changed myself a few weeks after getting it, but which I now think are just due to catching it on things all the time. It didn't do anything for me sensitivity wise as I've often heard mentioned, I just like the way it looks and it just makes me more confident / assured when I think that I have this thing that no one else knows about unless I've told them. Sometimes at school though people will see all my other piercings and for some reason the next assumption they make is that I have my nipple pierced, which I am always quick to deny as I'm not sure what some people would think of me if they knew. I am now planning on getting my other nipple pierced vertically, probably at a different place though as I'm not sure of how concerned the piercer at the Tattoo place was with my wishes, and didn't say anything about the risks of rejecting or what could happen if the bar was too short, which it was.
A few times I've changed it to a ring but have found that it seems to pull the piercing down, and looks like the lower edge of the fistula is exposed, which makes me wonder if perhaps a curved bar to begin with may have been a better option. Not long ago a guy I was with asked me why I only had a bar through one nipple, and I've started to wonder why its so common for people to get both nipples done at the same time, something I hadn't even considered. My nipple piercing experience left a lot to be desired but I guess you would have to expect that at a shop not advertising that it does piercings as well.
