I'm not entirely certain when I started to want to get my nipples pierced. Many years ago a female friend showed me her nipple piercings and although I thought they looked really good I never thought I'd want to get mine done. This was a long time ago, before my first tattoo and first navel piercing. Since then, I've found that I want more. But because of the job I had (and rather conservative boyfriend who freaked out at my first tattoo!) I found myself denying what I really wanted: more piercings and tattoos. Then, one day, just over two years ago, I decided that I would go ahead regardless, I just couldn't tell anyone. It would be my little secret, which actually made it more fun.

As soon as I had made up my mind that I was going ahead with the nipple piercings, I had to get it done as soon as possible. I couldn't wait around. So I went to Helter Skelter in Jersey, Channel Islands, the only place over here, to my knowledge. As I'd previously had my three tattoos and two navel piercings done there I felt very confident about going back for these piercings of a more personal nature.

The only thing I had to do was tell my boyfriend at the time what I was planning on doing. I think he was a bit stunned but liked the idea anyway.

Unfortunately the piercer, Kate, wasn't available on that day so I had to make an appointment for the next day.

I went back the next day, this time with boyfriend in tow. I was really excited about getting my nipples pierced, but a bit nervous too. I had heard it was very painful. I got the paperwork signed and Kate took me to the piercing area, which had changed since the last time I was there. It used to be a separate room but this time they had been making a few changes and hadn't quite finished, so the piercing area had not yet been closed off from the tattooing area. I didn't mind. Ok, so I was going to bare my breasts but no-one was going to notice as it was a corner spot out of eyeshot of the tattooists.

Kate asked me whether I wanted both done at the same time, which I did. We then discussed the type of jewellery I wanted. I opted for the bar rather than ring.

Kate marked me up for the piercings and explained that she did so before I lay down as (natural) breasts tend to change shape and position in a prone position – you don't say!

I didn't watch Kate preparing the instruments as I was too busy imagining the result. She was chatting away to me but I can't remember what she was saying. I was just way too excited about the whole thing.

Kate then told me to breathe in and out several times. The next thing I felt was a really sharp pain in my left nipple. God did it hurt! I'm pretty sure I gasped at the shock. I know my feet scrunched up inside my shoes and my hands clenched tight.

Seeing my reaction Kate asked whether I wanted to continue with the second piercing. I don't back down so I asked her to continue as planned. I was determined to walk out with both piercings. I was actually worried that if I didn't do both at the same time then I might not get the other one done. The second one was better. I was prepared for it and it went smoothly. Still hurt though but at least I didn't flinch, other than my feet scrunching up.

Once it was over I had a look down and was really pleased with the end result, and the look. They were exactly what I wanted and couldn't wait to show the boyfriend.

Kate advised me to use a saline solution for cleaning and to wear breast-feeding pads inside my bra for a few days. As I bled a bit I thought that was a good idea – didn't want anyone at work to see the stains on my blouse. I also found the pads were good to stop my bra from hurting my nipples. They were a bit tender. In fact, they were so tender for a while that I couldn't let my boyfriend near them, much to his disgust.

About ten days after the piercing I went back to have the jewellery downsized. I was amazed at how quickly and easily they had healed. When I had my navel pierced it took so long.

To this day I'm still very pleased with the piercings. I haven't had any problems at all. And I just love the way they look.
