I wasn't allowed to even get my ears pierced as a child so this only fed my obsession even more. I was told that it was "wrong" to pierce your body. I still could not shake my fascination with jewelry. I loved shiny pieces of metal, jewels, anything metallic. I vowed that as soon as I was old enough I would begin piercing myself. All of my piercings feel very natural to me almost as if they had always been there.
College brought many opportunities that included multiple ear piercings, navel, nose, and finally my nipples. I still have no idea how I went through with piercing my nipples.
The piercer was very friendly and mellow. High strung people annoy me. I was able to joke with him. I had brought a clean sock to chew on since I thought I'd scream but he assured me I wouldn't need it.
The worst part of the experience was the clamps. Those suckers were tight! Starting with the right nipple he counted to three, told me to take deep breaths, and went through in one quick motion. I let out a little extended "la la la la la" sound. My friends laughed and said that I really never do stop singing. The pain was intense for me but not unbearable. I asked if the other wouldn't hurt as much and he said "nope." I told him his beside manner sucked;-) The left one was not as easy to endure. I screwed my eyes shut as the needle went in and I let out a small kind of weird muffled scream.
Inserting the barbells was not painful at all. I kept looking at my nipples in fascination. I thought they were so beautiful. I asked the piercer to take pictures because I don't have a camera and I am not sure how Wal-Mart would feel about me turning in a disposable camera with pictures of my boobs on it. It was kind of odd having someone take pictures of me topless but I was so happy with the results that I did not care.
So far I have had them a few days with out any problems. I am very hygienic and I have not had a problem with puss, ooze, crusting, weeping etc. I have had some blood but a very minor amount which is probably due to the fact that I have been kickboxing a lot the past few days which results in chafing against a sports bra from the jumping up and down. I was worried that I would be unable to exercise for a few days but I went to the gym the next day and I felt no pain/soreness whatsoever.
Regarding the potential awkwardness of nipple piercing I wouldn't worry too much about it. I felt a little odd about walking up to a stranger and saying "hey, pierce my boobs" but it was actually kind of funny to me. Taking my shirt off in front of a stranger didn't bother me a bit. The door was closed and I felt like I was at the doctor's office.
I live in college dorms so the whole communal bathroom thing is a pain in the ass when trying to clean my nipple piercings. I have to go into a stall which is crampt to do the cleaning. The entire floor has seen my boobs now except for my RA who would rather not;-)
I am very glad to have gone through with it and I enjoy the sensation of having them in. I have small nipples and the piercing seems to make them larger. I don't know how to describe the sensation of wearing the barbells in words but it is nice. I would recommend it to anyone but I'd be honest about how painful the piercing was for me. During the experience I kept thinking "what am I doing???" Especially when the first side was just about to be pierced I had the fleeting thought that I must be insane. Luckily, the desire to have the piercing overrided my questions about my sanity. The pain is just a fuzzy memory now but the happiness from the piercing is still fresh. I catch myself pulling my shirt down when I am alone and smiling. It was a great adrenaline rush and I find them very aesthetically pleasing. I have always thought that pierced nipples were sexy. I am also happy that they are a piercing I will never have to worry about being forced to take out for a job. As far as I know employers may not check your nipples!
I also would recommend getting barbells if you are physically active. I am not an expert on nipple piercing or anything but it seems to me that the barbells would not get as irritated from friction as rings would.
