I have always liked the world of body modification. When I was a kid I used to be fascinated with tattoos, thinking about getting one hidden from my parents and stuff like that, and while I started growing up I have became more and more interested in less mainstream and/or visible modifications, which leads us to the target of this experience: my very first piercing, a nipple piercing.

It seemed like the best mod to start with: it is not visible, it looks really good and it is a personal piercing. But I never had the money, the time, or was not in the mood when I had the opportunities to do it. But one day all of this changed. I felt like it was the right moment to start piercing myself.
My girlfriend was divided between getting herself a pair of piercings or a tattoo (later she got it all done, but not at the same time), so we went to this studio near by the place we live to check the prices and see if it was worthy doing it there. Both of us knew the piercer, so we were familiar with his work and trusted him. She started talking to him to see if it was possible to get the piercings and the tattoo done all at once, trying to see if it would be cheaper by doing all at once – though she did not really wanted to. So I jumped in the conversation and said "what if I get myself a piercing, could you cheapen the price then?" The guy answered "yeah, sure", so I said I wanted to get my nip done. I still can't believe I said that, though I am happy that I did.
He asked me how many mm I wanted to get it done, what type of jewelry I'd like to have and the nipple that should be pierced. We winded up choosing a 1.6 mm (14 ga) stainless steel horseshoe and I chose my left nip as the victim. We went into the piercing room, and while he was doing my girlfriend's double nostril piercing, I tried to get prepared for the pain. I repeated to myself "it won't hurt, it won't hurt", but in the end I knew it would be the worst pain that I'd feel at that point of my life.
3 minutes later he called me and told me to stand up while he would mark the the places where the jewel was supposed to come in and out. After that I sat down and asked myself "am I nuts? Why am I doing this?", though this didn't last long enough to change my mind. He told me to take a deep breath and stay calm, claiming that feeling nervous could increase the pain. What a relief. He pushed in the needle and I felt it ripping off my skin and flesh, but it didn't really hurt, it just kinda bothered. On the other hand, when he pushed the needle out, the pain was awful. I remember thinking "I'll never do this again", but it had the same effect as saying "I'll never drink again" after a bad hangover. 5 minutes later I was already planning on saving money to get the other nip done.
I left the studio feeling complete. It was one of the best sensations I've ever felt, and it's the main reason why I kept doing piercings. It made me feel free and it made me feel as an owner of my body.
Probably the coolest part was getting home and showing it to my mom and my brother. He said "you're plain sick, dude" (he say that for every piercing I come up with) and my mom stood speechless for a few seconds, and then asked "why did you do this?". I said I'd always liked it and that I wanted this very bad, so she didn't think I had rushed into something I'd never really thought about. This didn't make her hate the idea of my nipple pierced less than when she first looked at it, but it made her look at me with different eyes. She knew I was being responsible and that ended up being good for the two of us. But she still gets upset and asks me the same question whenever I get a new piercing and show her.
Well, it has been an year since I've done this piercing and not for one second I felt any regrets about it. This was my entrance door to the body modification world (and also to bankrupt) and in less than an year after it, I got another five piercings (right nip, septum, ampallang and venom) and a stretch. But these are subjects for others experiences reports.
