We were going to get married in two months and two days and we knew that we weren't able to afford wedding rings, so we thought we would try something a little different.

Having passed a piercing shop on a number of occasions, we thought it might be meaningful, not to mention unconventional to each have a nipple pierced. We made an appointment, arrived together and were ushered into the room. Feeling that she might chicken out if she saw someone with a needle through a nipple, my fiancée volunteered to go first.

We had agreed that she would have her left nipple pierced and I my right, removing her shirt she presented her breast, and the first nipple in question. Lying back, our piercer marked the entry and exit spot, swabbed some betadine onto the nipple, clamped, then out came the needle. They always seem much larger than the holes they produce don't they? In it went, a few deep breaths, a couple of bawdy words and the needle was through., The needle was where planned, at the base of the nipple, and in short order the jewelry, a mere twelve gage ring, with an amethyst bead was in.

I thought it looked very nice, but wished that I had gone first, now it was my turn.

I removed my shirt and the area was prepared. I had an inverted nipple, but our piercer said that was OK and would probably help reverse it anyway. She mentioned it would be a fairly deep piercing as well though, largely because there wasn't too much nipple there to begin with.

The clamps were applied after marking, the needle was produced, I took a few deep breaths and WHAMMO! I had a needle stuck through my tit. I would love to say that it didn't hurt, but to be honest, it felt like someone had taken a not-at-all-insignificant piece of metal and stuck it through me. But, it was over- thank god. A similar size ring (with a hematite bead) had been chosen for my wee nipple, in short order it was done.

We were instructed to clean the ring twice a day with betadine or bactine, keep it clean continue for six weeks.

That night, we both experience our first cleanings. Although sore, it was manageable for me. My fiancée called out weakly as she started to clean her new ring, however, feeling as if she was going to pass out. She didn't, but it was very painful she said. It got better, quickly becoming nowhere near as uncomfortable.

Being the good boy I was, I took my ring out while in the shower a couple of days later to make sure it was nice and clean. It was out for about ten minutes- no longer, I am sure- but I couldn't get it back.

Nobody told me that I shouldn't do this. What did I know? Anyway, our piercer whom I promptly revisited, was quite willing to help get it back. I removed my shirt, She cleaned the jewelry and started threading it through my nipple. Only it didn't work for her either. I guess she thought it must have gotten a little tight, and together we expended a considerable amount of sweat trying to get the thing back in; hers spent from exertion, mine spent BECAUSE IT REALLY REALY HURT. After ten minutes or so, we both agreed that it wasn't going anywhere, and she whipped out another needle and pierced me again. Thank God that was over.

I am sorry to say that over the two plus years that my (now) wife had her ring and the nearly three and a half years that I had mine, they caused us considerable grief. They never seemed to heal. We used tons of betadine, trying to stop what seemed to be some kind of thick, pussy secretion that never stopped for long, neither of us liked having our nipples touched, which we had thought would be lots of fun.

I persevered, a little longer with my piercing as I thought if I could stretch it so the hole was a little more generous, it might dry out and heal. I thought it would be fun to be able to put a finger through the piercing eventually. Over a year or two, I gradually tried stretching it with an assortment of knitting needles and similair kinds of implements found in sewing shops.

In retrospect I would have been wise to go to someone who knew what they were doing. I would always use a ring that was one size larger than the one I had in already, never stretching more than one size. I eventually bought an especially large ring with knobs that you could unscrew – 4 gage if I recall correctly, and I tried to fit it through the hole. What followed was a night to forget. After about forty five minutes of pain, sweat, blood and anguish, I had managed to get the damn thing in. I had torn my nipple though. It was very sore, very large and ultimately very dumb looking.

It didn't last long after that. I removed it and where I once had no nipple to speak of, I now have a nice healthy chunk of scar tissue.

I wonder if we tried to clean the rings too often. We moved to the sticks and the piercing shop in Victoria where we had this done nearly ten years ago closed shortly afterwards anyway, so we couldn't return for advice, and whenever I asked anyone in other piercing shops what was going on, they never seemed to be able to tell us. We were left to sort it out and never did so successfully. We had really wanted to have and to keep these rings, but they didn't want us. Ten years later though we still have each other.

We have both had another piercing since (elsewhere- nipples are off limits), they were no trouble at all. We used only sea-salt and water. I still don't get it.
