I got my left nipple pierced after much deliberation and the Piercer at the time had said that I "would be back, most people do as it looks out place" of course I was told this right after the piercing had taken place and she was going through after care instructions. At that time the following thoughts were going through my head in no particular order, but with equal amount of profanities that I have excluded... "No way!" "That hurt!" and "Yeah right!!"

Well a lot of people make a liar out of me. Once I had gotten used to it, I loved it. I never had any feeling in my nipples before, but now I did. I started to think out about getting the other one done. But I was not going to be normal, nope, that's not me at all. I wanted something a little different. One night someone pointed out that I do really lead a double life, my work and my personal life. At work I am generally professional, fairly clean cut (for my industry anyway) and appear conservative. Outside of work on the other hand, I am a little different. I jump out of 'perfectly good' aeroplanes for fun and other equally stupid things to pass my time. This led me to my decision to get my right nipple pierced vertically.

I live some 1600 kms (1000 miles) from the nearest city and although there are a few piercers here, they have a bad reputation for poor work and have been known to run around town telling everyone about who they pierced and where. This is not what I need, I need to be able to maintain my double life and keep my personal life out of work. I choose to get pierced in a city, the anonymity is excellent and the piercers are n my mind a lot more professional.

It took a few months to get back to a city, but I had some holidays owing so I went back to Adelaide in South Australia for a few weeks of heavy relaxation, partying, jumping out of planes etc etc. After a really hard night drinking (memory loss), I woke up feeling not only exceptionally hung over but pretty bored knowing that I had nothing planned for the day. "I am getting pierced" was the initial though that crossed my mind, quickly followed by a few quick thuds in my head from my hang over.

Being a creature of habit I returned to Four Roses in the City of Adelaide. They are located in Hindley Street above Four Roses Tattoo. Walking from the car to the piercing studio, I smoked four cigarettes and walked pretty slow, at the time I would have blamed it on the hang over, but really I was nervous about the pending procedure. After I had stared at the stairs up to the secluded studio for minute or so, I slowly made my way up the stairs, where I was greeted by a nice middle aged lady who's name still to this day alludes me. I had planned on getting another procedure done that day that this piercer did not perform (there is another experience about that procedure.) After some paperwork had been filled out, we discussed jewellery, for my left nipple I got a barbell put in as I thought it would be less intrusive and easier to look after. I think it was mostly familiarity that got me to get the same again. I filled out the necessary forms and we moved into the studio.

Now is the part where I give my warning, having learnt from my own mistakes. I completely, whole-heartedly, discourage anyone from getting pierced while hung over or if you have recently been drinking. To start of with, your blood is not in the best state and this can not help if you bleed a little. Most of all for me, I feel a lot more pain when I am hung over.

I was marked up for positioning and shown all of the clean instruments and I answered the now obvious question "Why go vertical with this one, when the other is vertical?".. Shortly after answering I was the instrument was in place and I was asked to breathe in a hold it... Then breathe out.. As I breathed out the piercing took place, now I am not going to lie, this hurt, probably just the hang over talking, but it hurt a lot. More than the left nipple. The initial pain was over relatively quickly and after the jewellery was inserted I was cleaned up and a gauze pad was applied.

Aftercare was somewhat easier, as I had much better preparation this time. I saline bathed twice a day for a few weeks and then every second day for a while. The first day I usually saline bath quite a few times. I always wash my piercings with antibacterial soap, still to today, I think this is paramount and it gives you a good chance to check them out and make sure all is well.

I changed out the Barbells after a few months, I noticed that the balls would get caught on some things here and there, and I now sport a small diameter CBR in the right nipple. The vertical piercing is a little harder to do anything with, big jewellery gets cumbersome and hard to position, but I would never change it, nor would I do it any different if I got the chance. I have had a few more piercings since, which I am also submitting experience for, you'll find them if you look...
