I'd first started thinking about getting my nipple pierced around 4 years ago. My favourite teacher, Michelle had gotten hers done and said it was great. So as I was only 15 at the time, I waited. And waited. Did I mention I waited? Well, I did!

Now it's 2003 and my best friend Tara has just broken up with her boyfriend of 3 years. So she had the drummer from her band, Virus, take her to get a tattoo. As it turns out the tattoo parlour she wanted to go was busy (hardly ever happens in Adelaide, so what are the odds?) and she got her nipple pierced on a whim. Then 3 days later, she got the second one done. After this, my desire was re-ignited with a vengeance, the only thing I could think of was the look of a bit of metal protruding from somewhere on my body that only those I choose could see it!

Last Thursday I picked Tara up from work, and I did as much as I could to waste time. Eventually we ended up at Ice and they could fit me in immediately, so the paper work was done. Meanwhile I'm thinking "whoa... I'm not ready!" as it turns out, I was just nervous. And given my track record with body mods (I almost bit the nice woman who pierced my tongue, I kicked the one who did my navel and was trying to get a good hit in at the tattooist) my keys were taken away from me. I was really freaked out that I was finally going to do this, but Cindy just said it was natural and made small talk while she lead me back to the piercing room, which was brightly lit and very hospital-fresh (or sterile).

After explaining the autoclaving procedure for the clamps, needles and jewellery, I was asked what type of jewellery I wanted. Not knowing, I just said whatever Cindy thought best. So she got a 14-gauge barbell ready, too. Then, a hand washing later, on went clean gloves, everything was set up ready, and I was sterilised, marked and told to lay down, with my hands under my butt. Cindy said to take a deep breath, and then let it out. I did. Then I felt the tip of the needle. And it was over almost before it had begun. I won't lie and say it didn't hurt. IT DID! But it was quick and gentle when Cindy put the barbell through. And that's when I started bleeding. I think I made a wise choice in getting the left one pierced first. Because it continued to bleed for a few hours after it was pierced. But on the whole I was happy.

Til Tara flicked it later that night. And then I was elbowed the next day when I had just dropped a friend at work. And kept hitting it when I was doing face-up. I mean, is there just a big cosmic joke or something that up until you get it pierced, nothing ever hits a particular part of your body, then the minute there's a fresh wound there that's when people and things are drawn like magnets? I think the only person I told about it who didn't want to see it was my friend Seb. That's good on one side cos I got sick of pulling my shirt up, but bad... well, lets just say I'd have been happy to show HIM my tits! Not that any of this really has to do with my experience, just a little background to show you how happy I was that I finally did it and all that.

So far the healing has been going well. Only a week so far, though, so I guess I'm optimistic. And I can't stop looking at and touching it! I mean it. Even if it's only looking at my shirt to see the 2 little dents in it left by the balls or stroking it through the fabric or something! I'm addicted, and have already decided that in 2 months or so when this one has healed and had a nice nipple shield applied the other nipple will be getting the same treatment. Minus, of course, the elbowing, flicking and hopefully spurting blood. I've just been cleaning it in the shower with anti-bac soap in the morning and salt-soak at night. Every now and then it twinges with a bit of pain (like now, for example) but I figure that's cos it's still less than a week old (it's Monday and I got it Thursday) that's ok. The bad side, apart from the little twinges of pain, is the fact that I'm working in an industry that is somewhat unforgiving when it comes to piercings. As a security guard (par ticularly a female one) it's probably not the best idea to walk around looking like you have permanent "fripple". Also, given I'm still living at home, I need to be extra careful about when I walk around in loose, floaty shirts, but other than that, I'm immensely happy with my new addition, wearing it like a badge of honour.

And as you may be able to tell, I'm a fan of Rocky Horror. I love it. I couldn't live without dressing up every now and then with my friends. And so, to accommodate my new friend, I've decided to change from my tired and true Columbia in PJ's to a NEW Columbia, with rips in ALL the right places, and who knows, maybe one day, I'll have a collection of tit revealing costumes?

So all in all, if you're paranoid about the pain, stop being a wimp and just get it done, cos the pain will last for a few minutes, but the sensations when someone strokes a newly pierced nipple... lets just not go there shall we? So, the bottom-line? As a closer I'll give you the best advice I've ever gotten from my friend Seb: "stop talking about it and just do it!" Alright, so he wasn't talking about piercing, but it's true all the same!
