I had decided some time ago I wanted to get my nipples pierced but I wasn't sure how to go about it. I wasn't sure if I could make myself go through it, though I wanted them done very much. I have always been leery of needles. Even though I have had two tattoos done, I knew that getting pierced was a very different process altogether, and any pain associated with it was going to be unlike anything I could imagine. I did a lot of research on all different types of piercing, specifically nipple piercing. I got information from the Internet, books, and friends and other people who have had it done. It was hard to get an idea of how much it might hurt, though, because everyone had very different perceptions of their experiences.

I was quite worried about the pain though because my nipples are so sensitive and I had heard quite a few horror stories about people getting bad piercings from piercers who just didn't know what they were doing. Not to mention the other things that could happen to the piercing like migration, getting ripped out, or it getting infected. After much deliberation on the idea, I decided to go for it. I finally decided to go to the tattoo and piercing shop in my town that I had been to when I had gotten inked. One of my friends had also had her nipples done there and said the guy did a wonderful job. The piercer also happened to be the same guy who did my tattoo, which was great because I didn't feel quite so uncomfortable anymore since I was familiar with him.

The first thing he had me do was pick out my jewelry. I decided to go with the barbells thinking they'd be easier to sleep on and wouldn't be so easy to catch on stuff. Once that was done, he had me take off my shirt and bra. I stood up while he was on his knees in front of me to mark the entrance and exit holes. It felt strange... he used a surgery marker that left these dark purple markings on my nipples. Then he had me sit in a chair while he finished setting up. He then clamped my left nipple, making sure the dots were lined up right in the middle of the openings on the clamps. Then he used a hollow needle to pierce my nipple, sliding the barbell through the new hole. It was kind of creepy and I was bleeding enough so that he had a hard time screwing the ball on the end, but he said this was completely normal. In fact he said if I *didn't* bleed he would have been worried... after all he did just shove a rather large needle through my body. He took off the clamps and taped a small square of paper towel over my nipple, then pierced and covered my right nipple. Just to be cute he drew nipples on the paper towel. The right nipple got pierced a little deeper; so hurt quite a bit more than the left nipple did. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that getting my nipples pierced didn't hurt anywhere near as much as I thought it would. By the time your brain registers the pain... it's over and done with.

I have now been pierced just over two months and they are healing

Beautifully. One thing I didn't realize is that once you have piercings the aftercare drags on longer than you'd imagine. It's not like getting your ears pierced where you clean them for a few weeks and you're done. It's also a trick to adjust to having a new piercing, I think. You never realize how often you hit your nipples on things until they are already sore. The bed sheets, clothing, and tables... everything turned into a small torture for a short while when I was freshly pierced. I have a fairly large chest that I tended to hit on everything as it was And right after getting pierced I was in constant agony. As soon as they would quit aching I'd hit them on something else making them sore again. Even with the barbells, I also still had the problem with them catching on everything. I just had to learn to be extra careful with them. I'm now growing more and more used to them, however, and I am so glad I went through with this. I can honestly say that I don't regret getting them at all. They are starting to feel much better now... in fact, I am thinking about getting them either stretched or re-pierced and moving up to a bigger gauge. All in all, I would have to say that this was a good piercing experience for me. Now that I'm a little better prepared for what to expect I could definitely see getting other piercings in the future.
