A lot of my friends and peers had the piercing and I though it was beautiful, I think knowing that my parents would never let me get it done only fuelled my desire to have it!
When I eventually turned 16 I knew it could get it done without parental consent, but was still a little hesitant about my parent's reaction. I waited until February when I had began to be a little more confident and defiant when it came to my parents!
I first visited a hairdresser where I knew I could get it done cheaply, but they asked for consent from my parents which I obviously could not provide. So I moved onto plan B and went to a professional piercing studio, Attitude.
They said they could fit me in 30 minutes so I selected jewellery and went away while it was sterilised. I was so nervous! I got back and filled out the consent form with a shaking hand and then Kirsty the piercer took me into a small white room. She was really nice and could tell that was I nervous and told me not to worry.
She told me to take off my shirt and lie back on the table; she talked me through everything she was doing as she did it, which was really comforting. The most painful part of the piercing wasn't the actual piercing part, the clamps nipped really tightly, but she said they had to be to get it straight. Kirsty told me to relax and take a deep breath as she pushed the needle through my skin. She then put in the jewellery, she had a little difficult with the screw on balls which was a bit uncomfortable, but by then the adrenalin had set in and hardly felt it! After the jewellery was in securely she put gauze over my piercing and gave me aftercare advice and little package containing saline solution, cotton wool buds and an aftercare sheet.
I paid for my piercing, thanked Kirsty and left, that was that, I don't know why I was so nervous! I kept having little peeks under the gauze and admiring my piercing as I walked home, it was a little red but beautiful!
The redness seemed to go down within a matter of days and I didn't experience any bleeding like Kirsty said I might do, which was a relief as I'm a little squeamish! My piercing crusted and there was a little white fluid but nothing unusual. I had to really try hard to stop myself playing with it though, it was my new toy and I insisted on showing it to everyone I met. I also found myself grabbing it in my sleep and waking myself up with a howl of pain, that's wasn't so fun, anyone thinking about this piercing should invest in some mittens for bed or something, haha!
After a few weeks my piercing seemed to be healed and I decided to change the jewellery this was not a good idea guys! If you get a navel piercing I recommend not changing the jewellery until you're sure its 100% healed, leave it alone as long as possible!
Shortly after changing the jewellery my piercing began crusting and pussing like mad, it was disgusting! I didn't find this too worrying though, I just starting doing salt soaks twice a day again to try and keep it clean, this seemed to help. But all was still not quite right; I had a look at the underneath of my piercing where a huge red blob was starting to form! I thought it was just some sort of blister and bravely decided to pop it with a cauterised needle and drain it, eugh! On bursting it I realised that wasn't the case, the stuff inside was yellow and quite thick, I'm so squeamish I swear I nearly passed out. I do not recommend trying to fix a problem like this on your own.
I was worried now and decided to give attitude a call, they were under new management as Kirsty had just opened a new shop but the women on the phone was very nice and said I could come down and she would have a look at it. She set me at ease immediately that it wasn't so bad. She told me it was a kelloid and not to worry because shed seen bigger ones! She said I should soak it in surgical spirit twice a day and this would "dry it out". I took her advice and within about 3 days it was already shrinking.
It's a year and four months on now and my piercing has fully healed yay! It was only the beginning for me though, Ive since had two more navel piercings and plan to get two more to complete my project, I'll keep you posted!
