When I was about 12 I decided I wanted to get my navel pierced. Well it wasn't that easy; I had to talk my Mom into it. She said no. Well I had to look up all the information I could possibly find. From pictures and aftercare to information on autoclaves and after about 3 years of nagging my Mom decided to let me get it pierced about a month before my 16th birthday, and only because she let my older sister get hers done around the same age. Although I had to pay for it I was so excited; I was constantly online looking at belly rings. I wanted to get it done before school let out for the summer, but my parents were having a hard time finding all the necessary stuff needed. (Birth Certificate, Photo id, Etc.) Finally three days before school was out. My Dad took me, and my boyfriend for moral support, to get my navel pierced. On the way there I was really nervous, and I forgot to eat. But I finally got there.

They asked to see my belly button so they knew how long the bar needed to be. Then they let me pick out what I wanted. I decided on getting a banana barbell with a clear gem in the bottom ball. I didn't like to look of the captive bead ring. I wanted a gem in to top ball too but it was too much money. Then she went through all the after care instructions with me. I bought some soap with some moisturizer in it, because she thought it would work best, and that some soaps such as dial can irritate a piercing. Then we sat in the waiting area and looked a lot of pictures of pierced parts, and some were very disturbing, and after about 10 minutes of waiting Andy (boyfriend) and I went into the piercing room and she showed me the barbell and needle all in their separate little packages. Then she told me to tuck my shirt in my bra and she put dots on my navel to mark where she would pierce. She told me to check it out in the mirror and told me I threw my hip to one side when I stood and wanted to redo the dots to be sure they were straight. So I stood as straight as I could. Then she told me sit on the table, and then said she would be right back. She came back with a clamp and told me to lie down.
She explained to me exactly what she was going to do so I felt a little bit better, and then she told me to inhale and exhale, and then told me to do it again, but she was going to pierce me this time. Then when I exhaled I felt the needle going through and it didn't hurt and only took about 5 seconds. It felt like a pinch and a lot of pressure. I was thrilled because I did not flinch or make a face. Then I got up and looked at it and it was a little red but so cute. I got my sea salt and soap and little brochure on aftercare and left (My Dad had paid while I was getting it done.) rather disappointed because I wanted to buy a belly button ring for when I could change it but my Dad said I had 4 to 6 months to buy some and dragged me out. It healed well, but I had to be careful taking my shirt off and hit it a few times. The hardest part was that I always rested my books on my stomach between classes. I would forget about it and would end up hitting it and that hurt. Thank god school was out two days later. It healed in about 4 months and I changed it into a really cute one that had a red gem and very cute cherries that Andy got me. I couldn't go swimming for the first month which sucked, but it was well worth it. Plus I kind of went swimming anyways. I had to put a patch over it and it made a bad tan line that didn't go away for about 5 months.
I didn't have any complications other than that. Now I have a huge collection of belly button rings, and am planning on getting my tongue pierced. With a little persuasion from my Mom I should be able to. If not that won't matter because I'll be 18 in a year anyways. Not much she can do about that. All in all I would totally get my Navel Pierced all over again. That's my wonderful story!
