Well, I finally got my belly button pierced six months ago, after about 4 years of begging my mom to let me have one. I'm seventeen, I wanted to get a belly button piercing when I was thirteen. Anyway, I got it done on October 20, 2005, three days before my seventeenth birthday. I guess you could say it was a birthday present from my mom. I was so happy! Finally! So I went to a place called "Mind Altering Tattoo & Body Piercing" with my mom & my boyfriend. I had been there once before, for my nose piercing. It's a pretty cool place, but I don't think I would go there for tattoos, just piercings. Just my personal preference.

My older sister has had her belly button pierced for quite some time now, & so I already knew what to expect since she had told me all about it. However, during the car ride to the tattoo/piercing studio, I found myself growing very nervous. What if something were to go wrong? What if it was actually really painful, just that my sister could handle more pain than me? I felt a little scared.

Eric, the guy who pierced my belly button (and he also pierced my nose for my sixteenth birthday a year & a half ago), made me feel much more relaxed though. He went through the procedure step by step so I knew what was going to happen next. One thing I will never forget about this experience was the smell of Eric's gloves. I don't really know how to describe it, but I'm sure everyone who reads this knows what those particular gloves smell like. The smell of those gloves made me feel even more nervous. That's all I ever smell when I walk into a tattoo parlor. And all I ever hear is the buzzing sound of the needles digging into skin.

Okay, now, what's really weird about me is that I am seriously afraid of needles. Every time I hear the buzzing sound of the needles I get shivers down my spine. Yet, I love getting piercings & I cannot wait to get a tattoo as soon as I turn eighteen. Yeah, I know, I'm weird, right? So when Eric pulled out the needle, my calmness went away & I started to freak out again. The size of the needle really surprised me. I didn't expect the needle to be so large. Just for a belly button? I learn something new everyday. But then again, the needle Eric used for my nose piercing was pretty big too.

I'm very self-conscious. I admit, I'm not the most skinny girl in the world (which is alright with me, I love food!), so when Eric asked me to pull up my T-shirt & when he started examining my belly button to decide where to put the piercing, I felt like such a dork. Haha. But I'm sure he has seen worse things in his life, being a tattoo artist/body piercer. I'm glad Eric was so picky, otherwise my belly button piercing would probably look like crap. The gel stuff he rubbed on my belly button was really cold! As if the room Eric & I were standing in wasn't cold enough, with my stomach exposed.

Next, Eric asked me to lay down on the table, & that's when he pierced my belly button. It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. It turned out to be alright! I couldn't wait to see what it looked like. It looked great! I thanked Eric, and he thanked me for not kicking him in the balls. (Apparently that happens to him a lot. Poor guy. I guess one time, he was piercing a girl's eyebrow & she didn't kick him in the balls, but she got her knee into them. Ouch!)

My boyfriend really likes my belly button piercing. He's always playing with it. (Don't worry, it's not infected.) Now, six months later, I have a new ring in it. It's really cool. It's a guitar belly button ring, so awesome. My sister has a belly button ring that has stars dangling from it. I don't think I would ever want a belly button ring like that. What if it were to get caught on your jeans or something?! Oww! Can you just imagine how much that would hurt?

I don't think it's really fair that people say belly button piercings are only for girls who are stick thin. I'm not very skinny, I'm actually on the chubby side, but I still have one. It doesn't mean that I go around flashing people just so they see it. I don't see a rule written anywhere that the only reason to get a belly button piercing is to wear short tops & show it off to every person who walks by you on the street. I got a belly button piercing because I thought it looked really neat & I wanted to be able to see it. I don't really care if nobody else sees it, I wanted it for my own happiness. That's the real reason everybody should get piercings, not just to impress others. I don't know about anyone else, but the only person I need to impress is me!
