For about three years I had wanted to get my belly button pierced. I begged since the time i was 15 to get it done for my birthday and now that I turned 17, my parents finally gave in. I got it the day I turned 17 and it was better than I thought. Everyone else that has theirs done says that it hurts a lot and that you will cry but my eyes didn't even water. The woman that did my piercing was really good about it too. If you live in the Baltimore/Columbia/Ellicott City area, I highly suggest you go to Body FX. Its something I've always wanted and I'm so happy I got it done. It was worth the wait and the little pain that there was.

It started out with me, my mom, and my best friend going into the piercing/tattoo studio. The woman at the counter asked us what we were there for and I said navel piercing. I had to fill out some form and she had to get copies of my ID and my mom's ID. After that, she led me into the back of the studio and I sat down in the chair. She got everything out, the needle, the clamp and a marker. She had me stand up so she could mark where she was going to stick the needle in. after that, I was shaking. Then I sat down and she clamped my stomach. I did not look because I figured if I looked; I might chicken out and decide not to go through with it. She told me to take a deep breath, and it was done. I looked down and the needle was still in my stomach. I watched her pull it out and put in the barbell which hurt a little bit, but not even that much. She screwed the balls on tight and told me that I could loosen them if they were too tight. She also used an alcohol pad to sterilize my stomach. My mom was more nervous though. When we left I wanted to show her my new accessory, but she would not let me! I don't know what she's going to do when she finds out that I plan on getting an industrial for my 18th birthday. Hehe.

She told me how to care for my piercing; no peroxide, no alcohol, and no advice from my friends. She said that if there are any signs of infection that I should keep in the piercing but use sea salts to clean it. She didn't explain to me what she was doing though. I think this helped because when she was done, I didn't even think it had started!

After it was pierced, there was no blood. But, a while after we left and I was out to eat it started to bleed. My mom called the tattoo studio and asked them if it was normal and it was. They told me to just not touch it and wash it with some antibacterial soap when I got home.

I am so happy with my piercing. Some advice for younger girls that want to get theirs done; wait. I am so glad that I waited and did not get it done when I was 13. When you're 13, your body is still growing and you will be left with more scars. Some more advice? Don't do it yourself. One of my friends tried to do it herself and all she was left with is a scar and an infected belly button. When you get it professionally done, they use a hollow needle, and when you do it yourself, you're just using a household one.

Also, let your parents know what's going on. Don't try to hide it, just let them know that it is something you want and if they don't really care, wait. If it gets infected they're going to be more upset that you did it behind their backs and be furious and not want to help you.

The only thing I'm a little upset about is the fact that I didn't get to pick out the balls on my barbell. I wanted to get pink ones but the woman who pierced me gave me no choice and now I'm left with these stainless steel ones until mine heals. Oh well, I guess its going to have to wait...I did wait like four years before right?

Do what you want and what feels right. You only live once and you're only young once. Don't waste your youth thinking that it will be too painful because it wasn't. All it felt like was a small pinch. Plus, I can't wait to get cool new barbells to wear to match my clothes! I want some more piercings!!!
