Like a lot of people I know my fascination with body modification started in Jr. High. I'd began to see girls walking around showing their midriffs and freshly pierced belly buttons and decided that I desperately wanted to get mine done.

After many failed attempts of convincing my mom to let me get it done, I decided I was going to try to pierce my navel on my own (Which I absolutely do not recommend to anyone). Using a giant safety pin and a CBR I sat in my bathroom contemplating whether or not I was going to stab myself . After working up the courage I marked my belly button with two dots and I shoved the safety pin through my skin. After 5 minutes I finally managed to get the safety pin all the way through. Unfortunately my markings were way off and the ring ended up above my navel instead of through it. I immediately took it out and decided a lopsided belly ring wasn't worth the pain I had gone through. I was just going to wait for my 16th birthday and make my mom feel so guilty she would give in and let me get it done professionally. I read everything about piercing I could get my hands on and even called different shops just to get more info. My birthday came and went and my mom just wouldn't budge. I even offered to ground myself in exchange for my piercing.

About 6 month after my failed attempt my mom went on vacation and I found my perfect chance to butter up my dad and convince him to let me get it done behind my moms back. He agreed and off we went. After filling out forms and a short wait I was called back into a little room where everything had been set up and waiting for me. I sit on the table and wait for the piercer to enter the room. He came in and told me that he had forgotten about an appointment he made yesterday and that I would have to wait another 30 minutes or so. Disappointed my dad and I walked out of the shop and decided to come back in 30 minutes for round two. By this time I was so nervous I couldn't breathe. Finally 30 minutes had passed and we went back into the shop and waited for my turn. Another 20 minutes had passed I was told to come back tomorrow. Another piercer who was just about to end his shift saw how upset I was and decided that he would pierce me before he left. Now I was so nervous I couldn't even look him in the face, he gave me a few minutes to relax and catch my breathe before he explained anything to me. I felt so stupid about being so nervous since I had been preparing myself for this for the longest time. I decided it was time to put up or shut up, so I sat up straight and told him I was ready. I think I was more nervous about showing my body to some stranger. He reassured me that everything was strictly professional and the only thing to worry about was keeping my piercing clean and uninfected . After asking my piercer a barrage of questions I was finally comfortable enough to lay back on the table. I was shaking so much he offered to let one of his fellow co-workers hold my hand. He cleaned me and marked me and asked if I was ready. After letting out a sigh I said yes and he counted down from 3. I waited a few seconds to hear him say one, and when he didn't I looked down and saw that the ring was already in. "That's it!" I yelled to him. I didn't even feel a thing. He gave me my after care instructions and off I went, happy as a clam.

About 3 days after I got it done my mom returned home from her vacation and through a few family members she found out that I had pierced my belly button and went ballistic. She threatened to rip the ring out with a pair of pliers if I didn't take it out. After explaining to her that removing the ring could cause an infection she agreed to let me keep it in until it healed. Healing was fairly quick and I had no complications what so ever. My mom eventually got over it and let me keep it in. Then she decided that she like the way my belly button looked and wanted to get hers done also. I took her to the same place I got my navel pierced and she was thrilled with the results. I love my belly button ring, but now I'm looking into having my nipples done. I'll be sure to share that story also!
