In the past year or so, I have found myself more and more into body mods. I have wanted my navel pierced since I was like 13. And I'm now 17. At first, my plan was to go get my navel pierced on my 18th birthday next August. However, my plan soon changed.

The day before I got my piercing (Thursday Oct 6), I had been talking to a few friends, who are also into body mods, and who also wanted their navels pierced. One friend found a studio that would pierce people 17 and above. I was already excited and figured that if this studio was clean and safe, I would go get it done.

I got home from school and looked up Skin Funk Tattoo, the studio where a few friends were going. I looked at some of their work and the pictures of the studio and knowing what to look for, from Articles on BME (very helpful), I decided that it looked clean and safe.

The next day in school, my friend showed me her navel piercing that she had gotten the night before at Skin Funk. I must say, her piercer did an excellent job. I was so excited. I knew that I wanted this done, despite the fact that if my mom ever found out she would kill me. I tried asking her to get my ears pierced again and it was always no. But I knew that I wanted this done. So I was determined to do it.

I went to my boyfriend's house after school and told him about Skin Funk. I had asked him the day before if he would take me to get it done. He agreed, knowing that I have wanted this forever. When I told him, he was busy doing homework at the time, but after a few minutes of thinking it over, he decided a little break would not hurt him.

After we went to the bank, we drove out to Cicero, only 10 minutes or so from where my boyfriend lives. We had a little trouble finding the studio, because their web site was out of date and still said that they were at an old location. My boyfriend called his sister, who had gotten 2 tattoos at Skin Funk, and asked where it was. We finally found it.

I was getting nervous as we walked into Skin Funk. We walked in and I instantly knew that the studio was clean. I was going to do this. I had done my research on the piercing itself, and on the studio. I was prepared, but knew things could go wrong.

I told the guy at the counter what I wanted, and he got my barbell and put it in the piercing room. He went to the back and told Dice, my piercer, that I was there to get my navel pierced. We waited for probably 10-15 minutes. We looked at the work on the walls, and the jewelry in the cases. My boyfriend's sister called back, thinking he was getting a tattoo from Skin Funk. He told her no and that I was getting my navel pierced. He told her that my piercer was Dice, and she said that he did 2 of her tattoos, and he did really good job.

He came out and we walked back into a room. He told me to lie on the dentists chair. He never told me what he was doing, but I knew anyway. I had read dozens of articles and personal experiences on BME. He marked my skin and the next thing I knew I had a needle through my navel. He didn't use clamps. I'm not gonna lie, it hurt. I squeezed my boyfriend's hand. He had watched the whole thing. I felt the jewelry going through and the ball being tightened. He said "Check it out!" I did. I was in love with it already. He told me how to clean it and what to use. He gave me a piece of paper with cleaning instructions, most of which I knew from BME and Skin Funk's web site.

I had some discomfort with it that night. It took a while to get used to the feeling. I had to find comfortable positions. It bled a little, only like a drop or two.

I hadn't eaten hardly anything that day (not recommended), so by the time we got home, my blood sugar was crashing. I had a couple glasses of juice and a banana and felt much better. The next day, my piercing was virtually pain free, except for when I moved the wrong way and when I cleaned it.

It's been 3 days now, and all the pain is gone. It's a little red, which is normal, and a little sore. I've been cleaning it three times a day and have had no complications whatsoever.

I'm very happy with the way my navel piercing has turned out so far. It looks awesome, and it's perfectly straight. I love it! I can't wait until it's healed so I can change the jewelry!
