For my sixteenth birthday, my grandmother took me to go get my navel pierced. My two younger cousins had already gotten theirs pierced that summer and I had been wanting to get mine done since I had first seen one at the beach. I am a christian and most people(adults) that I know do not really approve of things like this, but I have always had a fascination with body modification. My mom, my aunt and my grandmother took me to this tattoo and piercing studio and I was so excited. While I was filling out the liability form I was also eyeing the tattoos on the wall to get future ideas. This really pretty lady took me in the back and drew on my stomach where she was going to pierce and then had me lay down on the table.

She put this disinfectant on there and she told me to take a deep breath. I felt the needle going in and I just laughed as I saw the look on my mother's face. She looked like she was going to faint. She put the top on the barbell and cleaned off the marker and I left the studio. I had finally gotten my navel pierced and I couldn't wait to show it off.

The only people that approved were my friends and my mom. My dad hated it and hoped that it would get infected. It never got infected, but it did mess up. It looked really cool for about two months and I was taking care of it like I was supposed to( cleaning it with antimicrobial soap,etc..)The only problem was that I was impatient and I wanted to change my new barbell right away.Well one day I went on a trip for school and the top of my barbell fell off (i got overzealous and changed it too soon).

I wasn't allowed to have the piercing at school anyway but now I was really screwed because I couldn't keep the barbell in.

For two days the only way I kept it from closing up was that I took my barbell and kept repiercing it.Then, on that same trip, I was running and I lost the barbell. I then had to keep repiercing it with an earring so it would stay open, and I went to the mall to buy a new one when I got home.I was doing yoga one day and afterwards I looked down and I noticed the top of the new one was gone now.I freaked out and I bought another one at the mall(bad idea).

It was way too heavy and it made the piercing really red and it never showed any signs of infection or anything.

After a day or so it started to bleed. For a month it was like this and I would show it to my mom but she did not think that anything was wrong.I started cleaning it even more and I started to notice the skin around the piercing was getting really thin. At first I thought that meant it was healing, but then it kept getting thinner and I knew that something was wrong. I was play fighting with my little brother one day and I hit him and while he was falling he grabbed the front of my shirt. He also grabbed my piercing and ripped it out. My mom freaked and called the doctor and they said that I should ice it and it was weird because it was not bleeding that much.

I looked on BMEzine.com and on there I learned that my navel piercing had been rejecting that piece of jewelry because it was too heavy. I have a scar there now but its not that bad. I use a scar fading patch every day to try to reduce it and I will eventually get it repierced. Next time though,I will keep the original barbell in because I am afraid of it rejecting or getting infected or something now.

My advice is to wait for it to completely heal before you change the jewelry, and don't get anything heavy. A navel piercing is technically a surface piercing which is obviously keen to reject. Also, never clean it with alcohol( it will dry it out) and do not touch it very much. The germs on your hands can increase your chances of getting it infected. This was a good experience for me because I learned how to be careful and take care of my future piercings and tattoos. It still really sucks though.

I now have to wait until I am eighteen to get even more piercings in my ears because my parents were really angry about the whole situation. There is nothing worse than admitting your parents were right. I was not ready for a piercing because I was not that knowledgeable of how to take care of them.I knew the names and types and procedures and everything but I did not even know how to act if I lost part of my jewelry. I definately know now.

Also,in case anybody was wondering, a navel piercing does not hurt at all. I barely even felt it. It hurts a little more than a shot but it is much quicker. If you are going to buy new body jewelry, buy it at an actual studio. You never know how your body is going to react to mall crap.
