Five years ago I asked my parents if I could get my navel pierced. To my suprise my mom actually gave me the okay to get pierced but when it came time for her to bring to to get it done that was a different story. Every weekend there was a different excuse as to why she couldn't bring me that day. Five years passed and I still did not have my piercing which left me pretty upset. I asked my parents every week if I could go that weekend and then finally my step dad made an appointment for me to go get pierced.

My step dad and I drove down to Body Charms expecting it not to be open yet but to our suprise it was. It was a Saturday and they are usually very busy on the weekends but I was the first person there that day. I knew Clark from him doing previous piercings on me so when my step dad and I walked in the door we were greeted with a casual "hey guys, whats up?" Clark knew why I was there so we started talking about the different ring choices I had. I chose a simple captive bead ring. He went into the back room to get the ring and when he came back we were off into the piercing room.

The chair in the room where the piercings are done looks like a dentists chair. I actually think it is a dentists chair and as a person who does not really like dentists, the sight of that chair makes me a little uneasy. The first thing we did was go over aftercare and the healing process. I was suprised by how long the healing was compared to other piercings. When I was told five to six months until I could change the ring I was like wait you mean five weeks? but I was corrected and again told that it was at least five months. I was then told that i would need to do salt water soaks twice a day followed by cleaning with antibacterial soap for 6 months until the piercing was healed. Lastly he said no laying on my stomach which was difficult since I usually sleep on my stomach.

After we were done talking about the aftercare Clark cleaned my navel and then marked where he was going to pierce it and sent me over to the mirror to see how i liked it. Everything looked good so then it was time to get into the chair. (note: he had already changed his gloves twice by this point and was switching into his third pair to do the piercing) He came over with the needle and clamp and said not to worry that he was just lining up the piercing so I calmed myself while he put the clamp on, not expecting him to be ready for a little while longer but then he looked over and was like okay ready when you are. I wasn't ready quite yet so I made him wait for a couple more seconds. I finally said okay and he pushed the needle right through. My first thought was thats it? It really was not that painful. A quick pinch and it was over. Another thing that suprised me was that it really didn't bleed at all. He pulled the ring through, snapped the bead in, and it was done. I got up and looked at my new piercing in the mirror and I loved it. It was perfect. Only slightly red but that was expected. He gave me a lollipop for sugar and we reviewed aftercare one more time before I left.

All in all it was a very easy piercing. It is still a little sore if I hit it on anything or sometimes I wake up and have rolled over on my stomach but nothing more than slight soreness. Moving around is not painful unless i am doing something that requires stretching and then you can feel the piercing pulling a little. I am doing my saltwater soaks and it appears to be healing nicely. So far I have had a good experience with this piercing and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in getting it done.

The best advice I could give to someone is to make sure you know your artist and his quality of work and do not let your friends pierce you with a safety pin. I have seen so many piercings go wrong that way. Please, go to a professional and if you are too young to get pierced and your parents wont give you their approval just wait until you're 18. In the end waiting a little while for the piercing outweighs the risks and scarring of a poorly done piercing.
