I am a nineteen year old female college student. When I was fourteen years old, I would beg and beg and beg my mother to let me get my belly button pierced. I'm not sure of why I wanted it done so much, possibly because I thought that it looked so cute on other girls who had it. After many months of begging, she finally let me get my belly button pierced. I'm still not quite sure why she ever let me, probably because she didn't want to hear me ask her five times a day, every day. Knowing what I do today, I would never let my fourteen year old daughter get her belly button pierced. I think that fourteen is way too young. Maybe at the age of 16 or 18. But anyways, she let me get mine pierced.

After researching a few places of where to get my belly button pierced, I heard of this place called Gun Slingers that had a good reputation of being very clean and sterile with their piercing and tattoos. It is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (where I live). I believe it's over on Shady Side, but I can't remember exactly where. Anyways, my mother and I decided to make an appointment and go get my belly button pierced. When the day came, I was VERY nervous and I was scared that it would hurt very badly. The time came to go get it done and when I walked in all I could focus on was this huge snake in a glass tank eating a dead mouse. I was about to turn around and run out the door when I saw that. After looking at the tattoos on the walls and body jewelry on the counter for a little bit, I went to the counter and told the man sitting there that I had an appointment to get my belly button pierced. I had to show them my birth certificate to prove that I was fourteen years old. My mother then had to sign some papers and then I had to sign some. I waited in the waiting room for only a few minutes when this HUGE black man comes over to tell me that he's ready to do my piercing. He was covered in tattoos and had so many piercings. He had those things in his ears that stretch them out that were the size of a bowling ball (a little exaggeration). To say the least, I was so scared.

I went back to the room and as I looked around, everything was very clean and sterile. He explained everything to me and how he was going to pierce it and how it would feel and how to breathe (even though it was going through one ear and out the other because I was so scared). He then made me stand up with my shirt pulled up and he lined up the hole with a dot from a marker. Then I lay down on the table. He clamped my belly button (which was probably the most painful part of the whole process) then he said "I'm going to count to 3, breathe in, breathe out and then breathe in." On the count of three, I squeezed my mother's hand and the needle went through my belly button and it was over.

It was very painless. It felt like a little prick and then nothing...the most painful part was the clamp because it was so tight and it was clamping your skin together. He then placed the hoop into my belly button and I was finished! Afterwards, he explained to me how to clean it. Which was twice a day with soap and water. I was to use no Neosporin or alcohol. He also told me not to touch it and play with it. If you touch it a lot, then there's a good chance that it will get infected. After the piercing, my bellybutton was sore for a few days and it was a little red and started to itch, but I believe that that is just part of the healing process.

After I got my belly button pierced, then all of my friends started to get it done. I like to think that I started the trend! Now that I am nineteen years old, I still love my bellybutton piercing and it has never given me any problems. It's so much fun to pick out cute belly button rings.

Since getting my belly button pierced, I now have one tattoo, a nose piercing and I used to have my tongue pierced but I took that out a little while after having it. All in all...I am very glad that I got my belly button pierced. I think that if you are considering it, you should definitely just go for it. It doesn't hurt at all and it's so cute!
